Occupational safety standards system. Industrial equipment. General safety requirements to working places
Full title and description
GOST 12.2.061-81 — Система стандартов безопасности труда. Оборудование производственное. Общие требования безопасности к рабочим местам. Standard establishing general occupational safety requirements for the design, equipment and organisation of workplaces associated with industrial (production) equipment.
Abstract
This intergovernmental (GOST) standard defines general safety and ergonomic requirements for production equipment workplaces: layout and dimensions of work surfaces, reach and motor zones, recommended working heights, provision for seated/standing operations, arrangement of controls and displays, guarding and access for maintenance, lighting and signage. It is intended to reduce occupational hazards by prescribing design and organisational measures applicable during equipment design, fabrication and process planning.
General information
- Status: Active (listed in current Russian GOST collections; may be superseded or replaced in some national systems).
- Publication date: Approved 11 November 1981 (Gosstandart USSR decision), put into effect 1 July 1982.
- Publisher: Gosstandart USSR / Межгосударственный стандарт; published in official standards collections (Издательство стандартов).
- ICS / categories: Occupational safety / Industrial hygiene — ICS 13.100 (safety of machinery / occupational safety classification).
- Edition / version: Original designation - 12.2.061-81 (1981/1982). Reprints and later compilations available (document has appeared in later collections and reissues).
- Number of pages: Core text typically published as a short standard (commonly shown as 2 pages in several catalogues; some reprints list 4 pages depending on formatting).
Scope
Applies to production (industrial) equipment and sets general safety requirements for workplaces associated with such equipment. Covers requirements that should be observed at the stage of equipment design and manufacture as well as during design and organisation of production processes to ensure safe and ergonomically appropriate working conditions for operators and maintenance personnel.
Key topics and requirements
- General ergonomic requirements for workplace layout and dimensions (working-surface heights, seating vs standing, alternation of postures).
- Definition and use of motor-field zones (optimal, easy reach, reach) to place controls and tools according to frequency and required precision.
- Requirements for safe access, maintenance zones and guarding of moving parts.
- Arrangement and marking of controls, displays and emergency stop devices for unambiguous operation.
- Lighting, signage and environmental considerations for safe task performance.
- Recommendations for selection and placement of protective devices, seats, footrests and operator aids to reduce risk of musculoskeletal strain.
Typical use and users
Applied by machine and equipment designers, occupational safety and health (OSH) engineers, production planners, plant engineers, employers responsible for workplace safety, certification bodies and regulatory authorities when assessing compliance of production equipment and workplace layout with established safety norms.
Related standards

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: An interstate (GOST) occupational safety standard specifying general safety and ergonomic requirements for workplaces of production equipment, originally approved by Gosstandart USSR in 1981 and brought into force on 1 July 1982.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers general design and organisational requirements for workplaces: recommended working heights, reach/motor zones, placement of controls, guarding and maintenance access, lighting and signage, and measures to reduce occupational hazards during design, manufacture and process planning.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Machine and equipment designers, OSH specialists, production engineers, employers, certification bodies and regulators concerned with workplace safety around industrial equipment.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: In Russian GOST collections the standard is listed as active in contemporary databases and reprints; however, in some national systems it may have been superseded or incorporated into later national or harmonised standards (for example certain national registries note replacement or revision). Check the applicable national/regional standards authority for the currently binding document in your jurisdiction.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it belongs to the SSBT / GOST 12.2 family of standards that address safety requirements for industrial equipment and workplaces; related documents in the 12.2.xx series cover specific machine types, processes and safety topics.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Occupational safety; workplace; production equipment; ergonomics; reach zones; working height; machinery guarding; GOST 12.2.061-81.
