Full title and description

St IEC 61892-1-2019 — Mobile and fixed offshore units — Electrical installations — Part 1: General requirements and conditions. This part of IEC 61892 provides general requirements and conditions for electrical installations and equipment on mobile and fixed offshore units used in the offshore petroleum industry (drilling, production, accommodation, processing, storage and offloading) and on associated installations such as pipeline/pumping stations, compressor stations and single buoy moorings. It is applicable to permanent, temporary and transportable installations and to AC and DC systems without a voltage-level limitation.

Abstract

IEC 61892-1:2019 (Edition 4) specifies environmental, electrical-supply and siting requirements, protections against external influences and electrical shock, and rules for ignition-source control for offshore electrical installations. The edition includes guidance on cold-climate protection and surface treatment/painting systems and consolidates certain protection and ignition-source requirements previously placed in other parts of the series. It cancels and replaces the 2015 edition.

General information

  • Status: Current / Active (4th edition).
  • Publication date: 9 April 2019 (IEC publication date).
  • Publisher: International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
  • ICS / categories: 47.020.60 (Electrical equipment of ships and of marine structures).
  • Edition / version: Edition 4.0 (2019).
  • Number of pages: 71 pages (IEC catalogue listing for the 2019 edition).

Key bibliographic details above are taken from the IEC publication record for IEC 61892‑1:2019.

Scope

This document is applicable to electrical installations and equipment in mobile and fixed offshore units and associated installations in the offshore petroleum industry. It applies to installations whether permanent, temporary or transportable, and to AC and DC installations without an internal voltage limitation (referenced product standards may impose limits). The standard excludes fixed medical equipment, the electrical installations of tankers and control of non-electrical ignition sources; specific exceptions and cross-references to other maritime and product standards are noted within the text.

Key topics and requirements

  • Environmental classification and conditions for offshore electrical equipment (temperature, humidity, corrosivity considerations and cold-climate guidance).
  • Power supply characteristics and system voltage/quality requirements; removal of fixed voltage limitations in this edition.
  • Location, siting and mounting rules for electrical equipment on units (minimum degrees of protection, positioning relative to hazards).
  • Protection against external influences (corrosion, mechanical damage, splash/exposure) and guidance on surface treatment and protective painting systems.
  • Protection against electric shock and requirements for earthing/grounding arrangements (see related parts for system-design specifics).
  • Ignition-source control requirements (moved into Part 1 from Part 7 in this edition) and hazardous-area considerations (cross-referenced to the series where appropriate).
  • Informative guidance (examples) on selection, installation and maintenance practices for offshore electrical equipment.

Typical use and users

Primary users are electrical engineers, system designers, project engineers, equipment manufacturers, offshore operators, installation contractors, class societies and certification bodies involved in design, procurement, installation and inspection of electrical systems on mobile and fixed offshore units. The document is used to define minimum general requirements to ensure safety, compatibility and environmental robustness of offshore electrical installations.

Related standards

IEC 61892‑1 is Part 1 of the IEC 61892 series. Other parts of the series address system design (Part 2), equipment (Part 3), selection and installation for specific unit types (Parts 4–6) and hazardous-area requirements (Part 7). Users commonly consult the other IEC 61892 parts in combination with product standards (for motors, switchgear, cables, etc.), IMO MODU Code and relevant ISO standards for non-electrical equipment and hazardous-area standards where applicable.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: IEC 61892‑1:2019 is the international standard that sets general requirements and conditions for electrical installations on mobile and fixed offshore units used in the offshore petroleum industry.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers environmental and siting conditions, power-supply characteristics, protection against external influences and electric shock, ignition-source control, and guidance on cold-climate protection and surface-treatment systems; it applies to AC and DC installations on offshore units.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Electrical and systems engineers, equipment manufacturers, offshore operators, installation contractors, classification societies and certification bodies use the standard for design, procurement, installation and inspection of offshore electrical systems.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: IEC 61892‑1:2019 is the 4th edition published in April 2019 and replaced the 2015 edition; it is shown in IEC catalogues as the current (active) edition. Check national adoption or amendments for the most recent national status.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is Part 1 of the IEC 61892 series (all Parts address various aspects of offshore electrical installations, e.g., Part 2 system design, Part 3 equipment, Part 7 hazardous areas). Practitioners should use Part 1 together with the other parts of the series.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Offshore electrical installations, mobile offshore units, fixed offshore units, ignition-source control, hazardous areas, corrosion protection, earthing/grounding, power supply characteristics.
