Full title and description
ISO 6707-1:2020 / ГОСТ Р ИСО 6707-1-2020 — Buildings and civil engineering works — Vocabulary — Part 1: General terms. This international vocabulary standard provides preferred terms and definitions for general concepts used in the design, construction, operation and regulation of buildings and civil engineering works; a nationally adopted Russian version (identical to the ISO text) has been published as a GOST R standard.
Abstract
This document defines base and commonly used terms for the building and civil engineering sector (fundamental concepts and more specific concepts used across construction, regulations and contracts). It is intended to harmonize terminology across standards, contracts and national regulations to reduce ambiguity in international and national projects.
General information
- Status: Published (international standard) — adopted nationally in the Russian Federation as ГОСТ Р ИСО 6707-1-2020 and in force.
- Publication date: ISO publication: August 2020 (ISO 6707-1:2020); Russian national adoption approved 24 Dec 2020 and introduced in Russia with entry into force 1 June 2021.
- Publisher: International: ISO (International Organization for Standardization); National text and publication managed by the Federal Agency on Technical Regulating and Metrology (Rostandart) for the Russian adoption.
- ICS / categories: 93.010; 01.040.91; 01.040.93; 91.010.01 (construction/buildings and civil engineering vocabularies).
- Edition / version: Edition 6 (ISO 6707-1:2020). The national text is published as ГОСТ Р ИСО 6707-1-2020 (identical-to/IDT adoption).
- Number of pages: ISO bibliographic entry lists 307 pages (ISO-format publication); national GOST R metadata and distributors list the national PDF at about 126 pages (different pagination/formatting between the ISO print and the Russian adoption copy).
Scope
ISO 6707-1:2020 establishes a harmonized vocabulary of general terms and definitions applicable to buildings and civil engineering works. It covers base concepts (foundational definitions) and more specific terms used across construction disciplines, contract documents, regulations and standards to support clear communication among designers, contractors, owners, regulators and standards bodies. The Russian national adoption mirrors this scope for use in Russian practice.
Key topics and requirements
- Standardized definitions of core building and civil engineering concepts (e.g., building, construction works, component, element, maintenance, decommissioning).
- Classification of types of buildings, parts of buildings and spaces (floors, attic, mezzanine, extensions, external works) to support consistent naming in specifications and regulations.
- Harmonization across contract, sustainability and service-life terminology when used with other ISO documents in the 6707 series and related ISO guidance.
- Intended use as reference vocabulary in standards, regulations, contracts and technical documents to reduce semantic ambiguity.
Typical use and users
The standard is used by standards developers, national regulators and technical committees, architects, civil and structural engineers, construction contract drafters, translators/localizers of technical documentation, building owners and facilities managers, and educators. In Russia it is referenced in national normative documents and by industry practitioners following the GOST R adoption.
Related standards
Other parts of the ISO 6707 series and related ISO standards complement ISO 6707-1; notable related documents include ISO 6707-2 (contract and communication terms), ISO 6707-3 (sustainability terms, later editions published) and terminology/service-life standards such as ISO 15686 series. These documents are intended to be used together to cover contract language, sustainability vocabulary and service-life planning terminology.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 6707-1:2020 is an international vocabulary (glossary) for buildings and civil engineering works that provides preferred terms and definitions for general concepts used across the construction sector; it has been adopted in Russia as ГОСТ Р ИСО 6707-1-2020.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers base (fundamental) and commonly used terms for buildings, construction works, parts and spaces, components and activities (including maintenance and decommissioning), to create a common language for standards, contracts and regulations.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Standards bodies, regulators, architects, engineers, contract drafters, facilities managers, translators and educators — any professional needing consistent, internationally-harmonized terminology for building- and civil-engineering-related work.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The 2020 edition (ISO 6707-1:2020) is the current ISO edition published in August 2020; the earlier 2017 edition was withdrawn when the 2020 edition was published. The Russian national adoption (ГОСТ Р ИСО 6707-1-2020) was approved December 24, 2020 and came into force 1 June 2021.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 6707 is a multipart vocabulary series. Relevant companion parts include ISO 6707-2 (contract/communication terms) and ISO 6707-3 (sustainability terms); additional related vocabularies and service-life standards (e.g., ISO 15686) are commonly used alongside ISO 6707-1.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Building; construction; civil engineering; vocabulary; glossary; terminology; general terms; component; space; facility; maintenance; decommissioning; GOST R ISO 6707-1-2020.
