Information technology. Set of standards for automated systems. Types, sets and indication of documents for automated systems design
Full title and description
GOST 34.201-2020 — Information technologies. Set of standards for automated systems. Types, completeness and designation of documents for creating automated systems. The standard (Межгосударственный стандарт) defines the types, names, required content sets and the designation rules for documents produced at the stages of creating automated systems (АС).
Abstract
This standard replaces older editions of the 34.201 series and formalizes the documentation taxonomy and naming/marking conventions used when developing automated systems. It prescribes document types (schemes, lists, instructions, descriptions, justifications, etc.), coding/designation rules and which document sets are required at specific development stages, linking document requirements to related GOSTs for design and software documentation.
General information
- Status: Active / Current (implemented as the 2020 edition of ГОСТ 34.201).
- Publication date: Designation year 2020; approved by the Federal Agency on Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart) by order No. 1521‑ст on 19 November 2021 and put into practical use at the turn of 2021–2022 (commercial distributors commonly show an effective/published date of early 2022).
- Publisher: Federal Agency on Technical Regulation and Metrology (Rosstandart) — issued as a межгосударственный (interstate) standard within the GOST 34 series.
- ICS / categories: 01.040 (Terminology and standardization documentation), 35.240 (Application of information technology) — related classifiers within the GOST/ISO system.
- Edition / version: Edition 2020 (current version of ГОСТ 34.201).
- Number of pages: Approximately 14 pages (published commercial copies commonly list 12–14 pages depending on format).
Scope
Applies to automated systems (АС) used across management, research, design and other fields, including combinations of system types. Establishes requirements for the kinds of documents to be prepared during system creation, the required completeness of documentation at each stage, naming and designation (coding) rules, and relationships to other design and software documentation standards used in system development and acceptance.
Key topics and requirements
- Classification of document types used in automated system development (examples: lists/ведомости, functional and structural schemes, instructions, justifications, descriptive and design documents).
- Rules for completeness (which documents and document sets are required) at defined creation stages (preliminary, technical project, working documentation, acceptance/commissioning, etc.).
- Designation and coding conventions for documents — standardized identifiers and shorthand codes for document kinds and sets.
- Content requirements and minimum contents for common document kinds (general descriptions, technical tasks, schemes, lists of input/output data, test and acceptance documents).
- Cross-references and mandatory links with other standards in the GOST 34 series and with general design documentation rules (e.g., application of ЕСКД/GOST rules for drawings and GOST rules for software documentation).
- Guidance on assembling documentation packages for procurement, development, testing, acceptance and transfer to operation.
Typical use and users
Used by system integrators, software and systems engineers, project managers, technical authors and documentation teams, procurement and acceptance committees, certification and audit organizations, and any organizations developing, purchasing or operating automated systems where standardized documentation, traceability and acceptance are required.
Related standards
Part of the GOST 34 series of standards for automated systems. Commonly referenced standards include: ГОСТ 34.003 (terms and definitions), ГОСТ 34.601 (stages of creation/lifecycle of automated systems), ГОСТ 34.602 (technical assignment / structure of requirements), ГОСТ 34.603 (testing and acceptance), as well as general design and software-documentation standards such as ГОСТ 2.102 and ГОСТ 19.101.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ГОСТ 34.201-2020 is a state (interstate) standard which defines the types, required completeness and designation rules for documents prepared during the creation of automated systems.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the taxonomy of documentation for automated systems, rules for which documents are required at each development stage, naming and coding/designation conventions, and how documentation packages should be assembled for design, testing and acceptance.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: System integrators, software and hardware developers, project managers, technical writers, acceptance and certification bodies, and any organisation involved in procurement, development or operation of automated systems that require standardized documentation.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The 2020 edition (ГОСТ 34.201-2020) is the current edition of this document family. It replaces the earlier ГОСТ 34.201-89 edition and is implemented as the up-to-date normative reference in the GOST 34 series.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is part of the GOST 34 series (Information technology — set of standards for automated systems). The series includes complementary standards that define terminology, lifecycle stages, technical assignment content, testing and acceptance procedures, and related documentation rules.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Automated systems, documentation, document types, designation, development stages, acceptance, GOST 34, technical documentation.
