Full title and description
STB DIN EN ISO 13165-1 E 2019-09 — Water quality — Radium-226 — Part 1: Test method using liquid scintillation counting. This document is the German/European pre-adoption (prEN / DIN) edition of ISO 13165-1, presenting the bilingual (German/English) version of the ISO method for determination of 226Ra activity concentration in non-saline waters by extraction of its daughter 222Rn and measurement by liquid scintillation counting.
Abstract
This standard specifies a laboratory test method to determine the activity concentration of radium-226 (226Ra) in non-saline water samples. The procedure extracts radon-222 (222Rn) produced by 226Ra decay and measures it using liquid scintillation counting; with currently available counters the practical detection limit is on the order of 50 mBq·L−1. The method is specific to 226Ra and not applicable to other radium isotopes.
General information
- Status: Draft / prEN edition issued for adoption as DIN EN (published as prEN ISO 13165-1 in 2019); later actions led to publication of EN/ISO updates.
- Publication date: Issued as prEN / DIN entry in 2019 (dates reported: 2019-08-09 / 2019-09-01). The underlying ISO edition was originally published in 2013 (ISO 13165-1:2013) and later revised (ISO 13165-1:2022).
- Publisher: Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) for the DIN EN ISO 2019 prEN edition; the source international document is published by ISO.
- ICS / categories: 13.060.60 (Examination of physical properties of water); 17.240 (Radiation measurements).
- Edition / version: prEN / DIN edition E 2019-09 (pre-adoption bilingual version of ISO 13165-1:2013). A later ISO revision (ISO 13165-1:2022) and EN adoptions (EN ISO 13165-1:2020 and subsequent updates) exist.
- Number of pages: The original ISO 13165-1:2013 edition is 14 pages (the revised 2022 edition is listed as 15 pages). The DIN/prEN packaging may show publisher-specific formatting.
Scope
The standard defines the principle, reagents, apparatus, sampling, calibration, measurement procedure, quality control, expression of results and calculation of uncertainties for the determination of 226Ra activity concentration in non-saline waters by extracting 222Rn and analysing the extract by liquid scintillation counting. It is intended for laboratory use in environmental and drinking-water testing and is not applicable to other radium isotopes or to saline matrices without additional validation. The method gives practical measurement capability down to about 50 mBq·L−1 under typical instrument conditions.
Key topics and requirements
- Principle: extraction of daughter 222Rn and measurement by liquid scintillation counting; selection and preparation of scintillation cocktail and extraction procedure.
- Detection limit and sensitivity: practical detection limit approximately 50 mBq·L−1 with currently available counters.
- Reagents, apparatus and calibration: requirements for standards, blank and calibration sources, and instrument optimization.
- Sampling and sample preparation: guidance for collection, preservation and pre-concentration (where applicable) for non-saline waters.
- Quality control and validation: performance checks, calculation of measurement uncertainty, decision threshold and limits of detection.
- Reporting: expression of results, units, and required information in test reports.
Typical use and users
Environmental and analytical laboratories performing radionuclide analyses of drinking water, groundwater and surface waters; public-health and regulatory agencies monitoring radionuclide contaminants; research laboratories studying natural radioactivity and geochemical processes. The standard provides the laboratory method used for regulatory compliance testing, surveillance and research where 226Ra is a parameter of interest.
Related standards
Other parts of the series and related documents include ISO 13165-2 (radium-226 by emanometry), ISO 13165-3 (coprecipitation and gamma spectrometry) and related ISO/CEN documents on radon (ISO 13164 series for radon-222 test methods). The DIN/prEN and EN adoptions (e.g., EN ISO 13165-1:2020) and the revised ISO 13165-1:2022 should be consulted for the most current adopted text in each national/European catalogue.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: It is the DIN/EN pre-adoption (prEN) edition of ISO 13165-1 titled "Water quality — Radium-226 — Part 1: Test method using liquid scintillation counting" (prEN/DIN entry dated 2019). The underlying international standard defines a laboratory procedure for measuring 226Ra in non-saline waters.
Q: What does it cover?
A: The method covers sample handling, reagents, instrument calibration and measurement by extraction of 222Rn and analysis by liquid scintillation counting, including quality control, calculation of activity concentration and uncertainty. It is specific to 226Ra in non-saline waters and gives a practical detection limit near 50 mBq·L−1.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Accredited environmental and public-health laboratories, water utilities, regulatory bodies and researchers tasked with monitoring or investigating radionuclide contamination in water.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The 2019 prEN/DIN entry is a pre-adoption / national packaging of the ISO 2013 text; the ISO document has since been revised (ISO 13165-1:2022), and EN/DIN publications were published/updated in the 2020–2024 timeframe. Users should consult the ISO 13165-1:2022 text and the current national/EN catalogue for the active adopted version applicable in their jurisdiction.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 1 of the ISO 13165 series on radium-226 test methods; other related parts address alternative measurement techniques (for example emanometry and gamma spectrometry), and there is a related ISO 13164 series for radon-222 analysis methods.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Radium-226, radon-222, liquid scintillation counting, water quality, activity concentration, detection limit, laboratory method, measurement uncertainty.
