Full title and description
STB DIN EN ISO 22007-4 E 2016-10 — Plastics — Determination of thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity — Part 4: Light/laser flash method. This is the German/EN adoption (English text) of the ISO method for measuring thermal diffusivity and deriving thermal conductivity of plastics using a flash (light or laser) pulse on a thin-disc specimen.
Abstract
This standard specifies the light/laser flash technique to determine thermal diffusivity in the thickness direction of a thin solid disc specimen by recording the temperature rise at the rear face produced by a short energy pulse at the front face. From measured thermal diffusivity, and using specimen density and specific heat, thermal conductivity can be calculated. The method applies to homogeneous plastics and to composites with isotropic or orthotropic behaviour and covers a wide temperature range and practical diffusivity interval for polymers.
General information
- Status: National adoption of the ISO method (published / subsequently superseded by later ISO edition).
- Publication date: 1 October 2016 (designation shows 2016-10 for the DIN/EN/ISO adoption).
- Publisher: Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) — adopted EN/ISO text (originally an ISO international standard).
- ICS / categories: 83.080.01 — Plastics; thermal properties / materials testing.
- Edition / version: Edition corresponding to the 2016 EN/DIN adoption of ISO 22007-4 (later replaced by a newer ISO edition published in 2024).
- Number of pages: approximately 43 pages (national/EN publication length varies by language edition and cover pages).
Scope
The document defines the experimental procedure, instrumentation and data-evaluation steps for the light/laser flash method to determine thermal diffusivity of thin-disc plastic specimens in the thickness direction. It describes specimen requirements and conditioning, pulse energy and detector arrangements, temperature ranges and environments (gas or vacuum), calculation of thermal conductivity from measured diffusivity, and considerations for materials with anisotropy or inhomogeneity.
Key topics and requirements
- Principle of the light/laser flash technique (rear-face temperature rise following a short front-face pulse).
- Specimen geometry and preparation (thin-disc specimens, thickness control and surface condition).
- Instrumentation and calibration (pulse source, detector/thermopile or IR detector, timing and signal processing).
- Measurement conditions (temperature range, gaseous or vacuum environment, repeatability and heat-loss corrections).
- Data evaluation methods (Parker‑type analysis and corrections, calculation of thermal diffusivity and conversion to thermal conductivity using density and specific heat).
- Uncertainty estimation and reporting of results.
- Applicability limits (typical diffusivity and temperature ranges; notes on inhomogeneous or thickness-dependent results).
Typical use and users
Used by materials testing laboratories, polymer R&D and product development teams, quality-control laboratories, instrument manufacturers (laser/flash thermal analysers), certification bodies and standards committees for characterizing thermal transport properties of plastics and polymer-based composites.
Related standards
Part of the ISO 22007 series (measurement of thermal conductivity/diffusivity of plastics). Relevant related standards and references commonly cited with this method include ISO 22007-1 (general principles), ISO 18755 (laser flash for ceramics — related technique), ISO 291 (conditioning of specimens) and other national/adopted EN versions of ISO 22007 parts and test preparation standards.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: A national/EN adoption (DIN/EN/ISO designation) of ISO 22007-4 specifying the light/laser flash method to determine thermal diffusivity and calculate thermal conductivity of plastics (published under the 2016 adoption designation).
Q: What does it cover?
A: The method covers experimental set-up, specimen requirements, measurement procedure, data evaluation (including common analytical corrections), uncertainty estimation and reporting for thin-disc plastic specimens tested by a short light/laser pulse and rear-face temperature measurement.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Materials testing and quality laboratories, polymer product developers, research groups studying thermal properties of plastics, manufacturers of flash‑method instruments, and accreditation/standards bodies.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The DIN/EN/ISO adoption dated 2016 has been part of the ISO 22007-4 lifecycle; users should note ISO published a newer edition (ISO 22007-4) in 2024 (3rd edition), so the 2016 national/EN text has been superseded by later ISO/EN editions — check the national standards body for the current adopted version for your country before use.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 4 of the ISO 22007 series (thermal conductivity and diffusivity of plastics); other parts cover general principles and complementary methods.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Laser flash; light flash; thermal diffusivity; thermal conductivity; plastics testing; Parker method; ISO 22007-4; DIN EN adoption.
