Full title and description
ISO 10083:2006 — Oxygen concentrator supply systems for use with medical gas pipeline systems. This International Standard specifies requirements for the design and installation of oxygen concentrator supply systems intended to be used in association with medical gas pipeline distribution systems that comply with ISO 7396-1. The standard applies only to concentrator systems that produce oxygen-enriched air with an oxygen concentration not less than 90% and excludes domiciliary (home-use) oxygen concentrators (see ISO 8359).
Abstract
ISO 10083:2006 sets out safety, quality and installation requirements for oxygen concentrator supply systems that feed into medical gas pipeline networks. It covers performance and system design criteria for concentrators (pressure swing adsorption type and equivalent technologies) when used as facility supply sources, including provisions to ensure purity (≥90% O2), availability and compatibility with pipeline systems that meet ISO 7396-1. Domiciliary concentrators are explicitly excluded from the scope.

Scope
Applies to oxygen concentrator supply systems intended to be connected to medical gas pipeline distribution systems that comply with ISO 7396-1. The standard is limited to concentrator systems that produce oxygen-enriched air with an oxygen concentration of not less than 90%. It excludes domiciliary/home-use oxygen concentrators (these are covered by ISO 8359). The document addresses design and installation aspects required to ensure safe, reliable supply when concentrators are used as hospital or facility sources for medical pipeline systems.
Key topics and requirements
- Design and installation requirements for oxygen concentrator supply systems intended for medical gas pipeline connection (sizing, location, ventilation and environmental considerations).
- Minimum oxygen concentration requirement for applicability: ≥ 90% O2.
- Safety and quality requirements to ensure purity, availability and compatibility with ISO 7396-1 pipeline systems.
- Exclusions and interfaces: clarification that domiciliary concentrators are out of scope (reference to ISO 8359) and requirements for backup/reserve arrangements where applicable.
- Operational considerations such as maintenance recommendations, monitoring and alarms (high-level guidance intended for system designers and facility engineers).
Typical use and users
Primary users: hospital biomedical engineers, clinical engineers, medical gas system designers and installers, equipment manufacturers (oxygen concentrator suppliers), facility project teams, healthcare safety compliance officers and regulators responsible for medical gas infrastructure. The standard was intended to guide installation and integration of concentrator-based sources into clinical pipeline systems.
Related standards
ISO 7396-1 (Medical gas pipeline systems — Part 1: Pipeline systems for compressed medical gases and vacuum) — the pipeline system standard with which concentrator supply systems must be compatible. ISO 8359 (oxygen concentrators for domiciliary use) — covers home-use devices excluded from ISO 10083. ISO/TC 121/SC 6 is the technical committee responsible for medical gas systems. ISO 10083:2006 has been superseded by ISO 7396-1:2016 (for consolidated pipeline/supply system requirements).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 10083:2006 is an International Standard that defined requirements for oxygen concentrator supply systems intended for connection to medical gas pipeline systems.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers design and installation requirements for facility-grade oxygen concentrator supply systems that produce oxygen‑enriched air with oxygen concentration not less than 90%, and their interface with medical gas pipeline systems. Home/domiciliary concentrators are excluded.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Hospital biomedical and clinical engineers, medical gas system designers and installers, equipment manufacturers and healthcare facility project teams.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 10083:2006 has been withdrawn and its subject matter consolidated under newer pipeline system requirements; ISO 7396-1:2016 is cited as the relevant current standard covering medical gas pipeline systems and related supply arrangements. The withdrawal/replacement is recorded in ISO’s catalogue and by national standards bodies (withdrawn: 15 February 2016 / superseded by ISO 7396-1:2016).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It relates to the body of standards for medical gas pipeline systems and medical gas equipment maintained by ISO/TC 121 (specifically SC 6 for medical gas systems). Related parts include ISO 7396 (pipeline systems) and ISO 8359 (domiciliary oxygen concentrators).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Oxygen concentrator, medical gas pipeline, medical gas, ISO 10083, oxygen supply, PSA (pressure swing adsorption), installation, purity (≥90% O2).
