Full title and description

ISO 10302-1:2024 — Acoustics — Measurement of airborne noise emitted and structure-borne vibration induced by small air-moving devices — Part 1: Airborne noise measurement. This International Standard specifies test apparatus and methods for determining airborne noise emitted by small air-moving devices (AMDs) such as propeller, tube-axial, vane-axial and centrifugal fans, and motorized impellers, used for cooling electronic, electrical and mechanical equipment.

Abstract

This document defines procedures to measure the airborne noise (sound power level) emitted by small air-moving devices as a function of volume flow rate and the fan static pressure developed on a test apparatus. It provides a test-plenum-based method intended to give comparable results across manufacturers and laboratories, and includes a method, based on experimental data, to determine the maximum volume flow rate of a scaled plenum for which the procedure is applicable. Results are intended for engineering information, performance verification, and use in purchase specifications and contracts.

Key bibliographic and lifecycle data above are taken from the ISO record for ISO 10302-1:2024.

Scope

ISO 10302-1:2024 applies to measurement of airborne noise emitted by small air-moving devices (AMDs) mounted in a test plenum. It covers a range of AMD types (propeller fans, tube-axial, vane-axial, centrifugal fans, motorized impellers and variants) and specifies the test apparatus, measurement procedures, operating points (volume flow rate and fan static pressure), and associated reporting to obtain repeatable and comparable sound power data. The standard is aimed at measurements that support equipment design, manufacturer performance verification and procurement.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition and construction of the test plenum (full-size and scaled variants) and allowable mounting configurations.
  • Measurement of airborne sound power level as a function of volume flow rate and fan static pressure.
  • Specification of measurement apparatus, microphone positions, instrumentation calibration and uncertainty considerations.
  • Test procedures for steady operating points and for reporting measured values and test conditions.
  • Method to calculate the maximum applicable volume flow rate for a scaled plenum based on experimental data.
  • Guidance on results presentation so data can be used in engineering calculations and procurement documentation.

Typical use and users

Primary users are AMD manufacturers, manufacturers that integrate AMDs into electronic/electrical/mechanical equipment (e.g., server, telecom, consumer electronics OEMs), and independent testing laboratories. Typical uses include product development and acoustic engineering, quality and acceptance testing, verification of supplier data, and as referenced test methods in purchase specifications and contractual agreements.

Related standards

ISO 10302 is a multi-part deliverable. Part 2 (ISO 10302-2:2011) covers measurement of structure-borne vibration induced by small AMDs and remains a related referenced part. ISO 10302-1:2024 replaces ISO 10302-1:2011. Other acoustics standards commonly referenced for acoustic power/room requirements (for example ISO 3741 and ISO 3744 family standards specifying sound power determination methods and test-room characteristics) are often used in conjunction with ISO 10302 procedures.

Keywords

acoustics, airborne noise, sound power level, small air-moving devices, AMD, fans, test plenum, volume flow rate, fan static pressure, measurement method, ISO 10302-1, vibration (related part).

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 10302-1:2024 is an ISO International Standard specifying methods for measuring the airborne noise emitted by small air-moving devices (AMDs), providing a test-plenum-based procedure to yield comparable sound power data.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers test apparatus, measurement procedures, operating points (volume flow and fan static pressure), reporting requirements, and a method to determine the maximum applicable flow rate for scaled plenums for a variety of small AMD types.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: AMD manufacturers, equipment OEMs that use AMDs for cooling, acoustic/test laboratories, and procurement or engineering teams who require standardized sound power data for design or contractual purposes.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 10302-1:2024 is the current published edition (Edition 2) as of 2 February 2024 and it replaces ISO 10302-1:2011.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — ISO 10302 is a multi-part standard. Part 1 covers airborne noise measurement (this item); Part 2 covers structure-borne vibration measurements (ISO 10302-2:2011) and is a related part in the series.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Acoustics; airborne noise; sound power; small air-moving devices (AMD); fans; test plenum; volume flow rate; fan static pressure; measurement procedure; testing laboratory; OEM verification.
