Full title and description
St ISO 3233-2:2019 — Paints and varnishes — Determination of the percentage volume of non-volatile matter — Part 2: Method using the determination of non-volatile-matter content in accordance with ISO 3251 and determination of dry film density on coated test panels by the Archimedes principle. This standard specifies a practical method for measuring the volume percentage of non-volatile matter (NVv) of coating materials by combining mass-based NV determination with measurement of dry-film density on coated test panels (Archimedes' principle).
Abstract
This document describes a method to determine non-volatile matter by volume (NVv) for paints, varnishes and related products. The NVv is calculated by using the non-volatile-matter content determined according to ISO 3251 together with the measured dry-film density of coated panels (practical dry-film density measured by the Archimedes principle). The method supports calculation of practical spreading rate, is suitable for products applied by dipping, specifies an additional plate shape to ISO 3233-1 and excludes materials exceeding the critical pigment volume concentration (CPVC).

Scope
The standard applies to paints, varnishes and related coating products for which NVv can be obtained by measuring dry-film density of a coated test panel and the non-volatile-matter content by mass (ISO 3251). It is intended for use across specified temperature ranges and drying/curing times and is appropriate for products that can be applied by dipping. It does not apply to coating materials which exceed the critical pigment volume concentration (CPVC). Annex A provides an overview of available methods for NV determination.
Key topics and requirements
- Determination of non-volatile-matter content by mass in accordance with ISO 3251.
- Measurement of practical dry-film density on coated test panels using Archimedes' principle.
- Calculation of non-volatile matter by volume (NVv) from mass-based NV and dry-film density.
- Specification of an additional test plate shape (supplementary to ISO 3233-1) and minimum mass requirements for coated panels.
- Applicability to dipping-applied products; exclusion when CPVC is exceeded.
- Use to calculate practical spreading (coverage) rate for real application conditions.
Typical use and users
Used by coatings laboratories, quality control and R&D teams in paint and varnish manufacturers, independent test houses, specifications writers, procurement and inspection bodies, and regulatory or standards organizations. Typical applications include batch quality checks, formulation verification, performance specification and determining practical spreading rates for product data sheets.
Related standards
Closely related to ISO 3233-1 (Part 1: method using a coated test panel and Archimedes' principle) and ISO 3251 (determination of non-volatile-matter content by mass). The ISO 3233 series gives a set of methods for NVv determination; ISO 3233-2 supplements Part 1 by specifying an additional plate shape and method variant.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 3233-2:2019 is an international standard that defines a method to determine the percentage volume of non-volatile matter (NVv) of coating materials by combining mass-based NV measurement (ISO 3251) with dry-film density measurement on coated test panels using the Archimedes principle.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers procedure and requirements to measure dry-film density on coated panels, the calculation of NVv from that density together with ISO 3251 results, and the conditions and limitations for applying this method (including exclusion when CPVC is exceeded). Annex A compares available NV/volume methods.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Coatings manufacturers (R&D and QC), independent test laboratories, specifiers, procurement/inspection personnel and standards bodies who need to determine practical spreading rates or verify volume solids for formulation and quality control.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The 2019 edition (Edition 2) is the current published version; it replaced the 2014 edition. The standard was published in August 2019 and is maintained under ISO review procedures.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is Part 2 of the ISO 3233 series on determination of percentage volume of non-volatile matter; Part 1 (ISO 3233-1:2019) describes a related coated-panel/Archimedes method and the series references ISO 3251 for mass-based NV determination.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Non-volatile matter (NV), NV by volume (NVv), dry-film density, Archimedes principle, ISO 3251, coated test panel, CPVC, spreading rate, paints and varnishes.
