Full title and description

ISO 37:2024 — Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic — Determination of tensile stress-strain properties. This international standard specifies a laboratory method for measuring tensile behaviour of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers, including tensile strength, elongation at break and related stress/strain values.

Abstract

This document provides a standardised procedure to determine tensile stress–strain properties of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers. Measurable results include tensile strength, elongation at break, stress at a specified elongation, elongation at a specified stress, and — for applicable materials — stress and elongation at yield. The method covers specimen preparation, conditioning, test speeds and calculation of results.

Scope

ISO 37:2024 specifies a method for the determination of tensile stress–strain properties of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers. It defines which properties can be determined (tensile strength, elongation at break, stress at a given elongation, elongation at a given stress, stress at yield and elongation at yield) and notes that yield measurements apply only to some thermoplastic rubbers and certain other compounds. The standard replaces the previous edition and is intended for routine quality and conformity testing in laboratories and production settings.

Key topics and requirements

  • Specified test specimens (e.g., dumb-bell type or test pieces prepared from sheets or molded articles) and dimensional requirements.
  • Conditioning of test pieces (standard laboratory temperature/humidity conditioning) before testing.
  • Selection of test speeds (elongation rates) appropriate to material and test purpose.
  • Measurement methods for force and elongation (including use of extensometers where required) and calculation of engineering stress and strain.
  • Determination and reporting of tensile strength, elongation at break, stress at specified elongation, elongation at specified stress, and yield values when applicable.
  • Instructions for test equipment calibration, specimen alignment and repeatability to ensure comparable, reproducible results.

These requirements follow the procedures and definitions set out in the published standard.

Typical use and users

Used by materials and quality laboratories, rubber and elastomer manufacturers, test houses, research & development groups, product designers and procurement/quality assurance teams to verify mechanical performance, ensure specification compliance, compare formulations, and qualify materials for application-specific requirements.

Related standards

Commonly referenced standards include other ISO tests for rubber (for example standards on specimen preparation and conditioning, tear strength, hardness and ageing), and equivalent or complementary national standards (for example ASTM methods for tensile testing of elastomers). Users typically apply ISO 37 alongside standards that govern specimen preparation and environmental conditioning to produce valid, comparable results.
