Full title and description
ISO 404:2013 — Steel and steel products — General technical delivery requirements. This International Standard defines the general technical delivery conditions to be applied to steel and steel products (with specified exceptions) and provides requirements for ordering, inspection, marking, packaging and documentation to ensure consistent supply and acceptance of steel products.
Abstract
ISO 404:2013 specifies the general technical delivery requirements for steel products covered by the relevant vocabulary and classification standards; it excludes steel castings and powder metallurgical products. The standard is intended to be used together with product-specific standards and with inspection-document standards that specify the types of inspection certificates to be supplied. Where specific product standards or contractual requirements differ from ISO 404, the product/contract requirements take precedence.

Scope
ISO 404:2013 establishes general technical delivery conditions applicable to steel and steel products (as defined by the industry vocabulary standards) except for steel castings and powder metallurgy products. It covers the information and requirements that suppliers and purchasers should agree at the time of order — for example, designation, dimensions and tolerances, chemical and mechanical properties, surface condition, testing and inspection, marking, packaging and documentation. The standard is not intended to override product-specific standards or contractual agreements.
Key topics and requirements
- Order specification: required ordering information and references to applicable product standards and contractual terms.
- Material description and designation: how steel grades and product forms should be specified.
- Tolerances and dimensional requirements: general expectations when product standards do not specify otherwise.
- Testing and inspection: types of tests, acceptance criteria, and reference to inspection documents.
- Inspection documents and certificates: identification of the inspection-document types to be supplied (see ISO 10474).
- Marking, packaging and preservation: minimum marking and packaging requirements for delivery and traceability.
- Non-conforming product handling and replacement/repair expectations.
Typical use and users
Used by steel producers, mills and processors, purchasers and procurement teams (industrial and construction buyers), inspection and quality personnel, standards committees, testing laboratories, and certification bodies. It serves as a baseline contract reference for general delivery requirements when product-specific standards do not fully define ordering or acceptance details.
Related standards
Commonly used alongside ISO 10474 (Steel and steel products — Inspection documents) for certificate types and with ISO 6929 / ISO 6929:2013 (vocabulary/classification for steel products) for correct product definitions. The standard also sits within the body of ISO/TC 17 technical work covering iron and steel products and is referenced by various product-specific delivery standards.
