Full title and description
Plastics piping systems for water supply and for drainage and sewerage under pressure — Polyethylene (PE) — Part 1: General. This part of ISO 4427 defines the general requirements for polyethylene (PE) compounds used to manufacture pressure pipes and fittings (mains and service pipes) for buried or above-ground applications intended to convey water for human consumption, raw water prior to treatment, drainage and sewerage under pressure, vacuum sewer systems and water for other purposes.
Abstract
This standard specifies general aspects of PE compounds for manufacturing pressure pipes and fittings, and it sets test parameters and requirements for referenced test methods. It applies (in conjunction with other parts of ISO 4427) to PE pipes, fittings, their joints and to joints with components made of PE and other materials for systems with maximum allowable operating pressures up to and including 25 bar (reference temperature 20 °C). Guidance for other temperatures is given in the annex.

Scope
ISO 4427-1:2019 covers the general requirements for polyethylene (PE) compounds and the test parameters for methods referenced in the standard, for PE pressure pipes and fittings used to convey potable water, raw water prior to treatment, drainage and sewerage under pressure, vacuum sewer systems and other water uses. It is intended for mains and service pipes both buried and above ground and is used together with the other parts of the ISO 4427 series to address system fitness-for-purpose, jointing methods and performance limits up to a maximum allowable operating pressure of 25 bar at the reference temperature of 20 °C.
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and general requirements for PE compounds used in pressure piping systems.
- Test parameters and requirements for the referenced test methods (e.g., melt flow, volatile content, pressure resistance tests).
- Application scope: potable water, raw water, pressure drainage and sewerage, vacuum sewer systems and other water conveyance.
- Design operating limits: guidance for maximum allowable operating pressure (up to 25 bar) and reference temperature (20 °C), with annex guidance for other temperatures.
- Relationship to other parts of ISO 4427 (material grades, components, joints, fitness-for-purpose and installation considerations).
Typical use and users
Specified by manufacturers, engineers and specifiers of water-distribution systems, municipal water authorities, utilities, pipeline designers, testing laboratories and accreditation bodies. Typical uses are selection of PE materials and compounds for pressure pipes and fittings, establishing test requirements during product development and quality control, and providing a normative reference in procurement and specification documents for potable water and pressure sewer systems.
Related standards
ISO 4427 is a multi-part series. Relevant companion parts include specifications for material grades, additional testing methods and fitness-for-purpose of assemblies; examples are other parts of ISO 4427 (e.g., parts dealing with pipes, fittings, joints and system fitness). ISO/TC 138/SC 2 is the technical committee responsible for plastics pipes and fittings for water supplies. National adoptions (e.g., BS ISO 4427-1:2019) and regional listings parallel the ISO document.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 4427-1:2019 is Part 1 (General) of the ISO 4427 series, which sets general requirements for polyethylene (PE) compounds and the test parameters used for PE pressure pipes and fittings intended for water supply and pressure sewerage systems.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers general aspects of PE compounds, applicable test parameters and requirements, intended uses (potable water, raw water, pressure drainage/sewerage, vacuum sewer systems and other water conveyance) and reference operating limits (up to 25 bar at 20 °C). It is used together with the other parts of the ISO 4427 series to fully specify materials, fittings and joints.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Manufacturers of PE pipes and fittings, utilities and water authorities, design and consulting engineers, procurement/specification authors, testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies use the standard for material selection, testing requirements and specification compliance.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 4427-1:2019 is the current published edition (edition 2, published August 2019). At the time of this record a new committee draft (ISO/CD 4427-1) is shown as under development to revise the part; that indicates the document is scheduled for review and possible update but the 2019 edition remains the published, authoritative text until formally replaced.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 4427 is a multipart series addressing polyethylene (PE) piping systems for water supply and pressure sewerage; Part 1 is the general requirements document and other parts address material specifications, joints, fitness-for-purpose and related topics.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Polyethylene (PE), plastics piping systems, water supply, pressure sewerage, pipes, fittings, test methods, maximum allowable operating pressure, potable water.
