Full title and description
ISO 4633:2023 — Rubber seals — Joint rings for water supply, drainage and sewerage pipelines — Specification for materials. Specifies material requirements for vulcanized rubber joint seals used in potable water, drainage, sewerage and rainwater pipeline systems, including temperature classes and specific material properties for long-term sealing performance.
Abstract
This International Standard (Edition 5, 2023) specifies requirements for materials used in vulcanized rubber joint seals intended for: (a) cold drinking-water supplies (up to 50 °C) and (b) drainage, sewerage and rainwater systems (continuous flow up to 45 °C and intermittent flow up to 95 °C). It defines seal designations, gives general requirements for finished joint seals, and is intended to be used together with product/performance standards for pipe joints. It applies to seals for all common pipeline materials and to elastomeric components of composite and non-composite seals.
General information
- Status: Published.
- Publication date: August 2023 (Edition 5).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 83.140.50; 91.140.60; 91.140.80.
- Edition / version: 5 (2023).
- Number of pages: 14.
Scope
The standard applies to the specification of materials for vulcanized rubber joint rings used in water supply, drainage, sewerage and rainwater pipeline systems across a wide range of pipe materials (iron, steel, clay, fibre cement, concrete, reinforced concrete, plastics and GRP). It covers material selection, designation by application and temperature class, and material test/property requirements relevant to sealing performance and long-term stability; in composite seals, certain tests apply only when the material participates in sealing or long-term stability.
Key topics and requirements
- Material classifications and designations for seals by type and application.
- Temperature-service categories: potable water up to 50 °C; drainage/sewerage continuous up to 45 °C and intermittent up to 95 °C.
- Required material properties and tests (examples: hardness ranges, elongation at break, compression set, stress relaxation) where applicable to sealing function or long-term stability.
- Applicability to elastomeric elements of composite and non-composite seals, including guidance on when specific property requirements apply.
- General requirements for finished joint seals and guidance to use this material specification alongside product standards that define joint performance.
Typical use and users
Used by seal and pipe manufacturers, materials engineers, R&D and quality-testing laboratories, pipeline system designers, utilities and contractors specifying joint seals for water supply and wastewater systems, and conformity assessment bodies verifying material compliance. Typical applications include design and selection of joint rings for new pipelines, replacement parts, and product development of elastomeric seals.
Related standards
ISO 4633:2023 is used alongside product and regional standards that set joint performance or alternate material classes — for example the EN 681 series (material requirements for pipe joint seals used in water and drainage applications, Parts 1–4) and other piping/lining standards that cite ISO 4633 for sealing-ring material requirements. ISO 4633 is also referenced by related piping standards addressing renovation and jointing where sealing-ring material properties affect fitness for purpose.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 4633:2023 is an International Standard that specifies material requirements for vulcanized rubber joint rings used in water supply, drainage, sewerage and rainwater pipeline systems (Edition 5, published August 2023).
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers material classifications, temperature-service categories, required material properties and tests (e.g., hardness, elongation at break, compression set, stress relaxation), applicability to composite and non-composite seals, and general requirements for finished joint seals; it is intended to be used with product standards that define joint performance.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Seal and pipe manufacturers, materials and laboratory engineers, pipeline designers, utilities, contractors and conformity assessment bodies involved in specification, production, testing and acceptance of joint seals for water and wastewater systems.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: Current — ISO 4633:2023 (published August 2023) supersedes earlier editions, including ISO 4633:2015.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is a standalone material-specification standard for joint rings but is commonly used alongside related product/performance standards for pipe joints and regional standards such as the EN 681 series for elastomeric seals.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Rubber seals, joint rings, elastomeric materials, water supply, drainage, sewerage, material tests (compression set, elongation, stress relaxation), temperature classes.
