Full title and description

St ISO 5634-1986 — Paper and board — Determination of grease resistance. International standard specifying a procedure to evaluate the resistance of paper and board to penetration and surface staining by fats, greases and oils (tests intended primarily for foodboard, greaseproof paper, vegetable parchment and similar packaging papers).

Abstract

ISO 5634:1986 defines a laboratory test method to determine grease resistance of paper and board by measuring two time-based characteristics: break‑through (actual penetration time) and show‑through (visual penetration time). The method describes sample preparation (creased or uncreased), equipment, test grease and weights, the procedure for applying test grease to specimens, criteria for observing penetration, and information to be recorded and reported. A technical corrigendum was issued in 1992. The standard has since been withdrawn and its subject matter is covered by later ISO documents in the grease-resistance series.

General information

Scope

This International Standard specifies a laboratory method for determining the grease resistance of paper and board used for packaging purposes (notably food packaging). It applies to papers and boards that may be tested either creased or uncreased and is intended primarily for foodboard, greaseproof papers, vegetable parchment and similar products. The test quantifies how long a specified test grease takes to (a) penetrate completely through a specimen (break‑through) and (b) become visible on the reverse face (show‑through), and defines the apparatus, test grease, sample conditioning and required test procedure.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definitions of break‑through (actual penetration time) and show‑through (visual penetration time).
  • Specification of test grease (simulated fat/oil) and preparation of wadding or absorbent backing where required.
  • Apparatus and accessories: specimen supports, weights, timing devices, and observation aids.
  • Sample preparation and conditioning (including allowance for creased versus uncreased specimens).
  • Detailed test procedure: application method, loading, timing and observation protocol.
  • Recording and reporting requirements: times observed, specimen orientation, environmental conditions and any deviations.
  • Reference to a technical corrigendum issued in 1992 for minor corrections.

Typical use and users

Used by paper and board manufacturers, converters and mills, packaging engineers, food-packaging designers, quality-control and testing laboratories, and standards bodies to evaluate and compare grease/oil resistance of packaging papers and boards. Typical applications include performance assessment of greaseproof papers, food wrappers, sandwich papers, take-away packaging and any paperboard intended to contain fatty or oily foods.

Related standards

Subsequent and related ISO work on grease resistance is published as the ISO 16532 series (for example ISO 16532‑1:2008 Permeability test, ISO 16532‑2:2007 Surface repellency test and ISO 16532‑3:2010 Turpentine test). ISO 5634:1986 was issued by ISO/TC 6/SC 2 (test methods and quality specifications for paper and board) and has an associated Corrigendum 1 (1992). National and regional test standards and method variants (adopted/adapted versions) may also exist for grease resistance testing.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 5634:1986 is an international test method titled "Paper and board — Determination of grease resistance" that specifies how to measure the time for grease/oil to penetrate or show through paper and board specimens.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers sample preparation, required apparatus, a step-by-step procedure to apply a defined test grease, and observation/recording rules to determine break‑through and show‑through times for papers and boards used in packaging (especially food packaging).

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Paper and board producers, converters, packaging designers, food-packaging quality-control laboratories and independent testing bodies that need to assess or compare grease resistance of packaging materials.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 5634:1986 has been withdrawn. Its subject matter is addressed by later ISO publications in the grease-resistance series (for example the ISO 16532 parts published in 2007–2010), which provide updated methods and coverage.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: ISO 5634 was a stand‑alone test method (first edition 1986) with a Corrigendum in 1992. Subsequent grease-resistance methods are organized in the ISO 16532 series (multiple parts) that now provide modern, part‑based test methods for permeability, surface repellency and related assessments.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Grease resistance; break-through; show-through; permeability; oil/fat testing; paper and board; food packaging; greaseproof; vegetable parchment; ISO 5634; ISO 16532.
