Full title and description
ISO 6011:2023 — Earth-moving machinery — Visual display of machine operation. This International Standard specifies requirements and principles for the location, visibility, classification, characteristics and colour of visual displays and indicators used to present machine-operation information to an operator of earth‑moving machinery (EMM), and gives guidance for their design and use in the operator’s intended position.
Abstract
This document provides requirements and principles for location and visibility, information classification, characteristics and colour of visual displays of direct-control earth-moving machinery (EMM) as defined in ISO 6165, for the operator in the intended operating position. The principles can also be applied to remote-control EMM. The standard addresses indicators, tell‑tales, multi‑function electronic displays and related visibility issues.

Scope
ISO 6011:2023 applies to visual displays that present machine‑operation functional information to operators of earth‑moving machinery. It covers placement and visibility requirements, a process for classifying information by importance and urgency, identification and labelling principles, illumination and contrast, and colour distinctions for indicators and warning lights. The document is written primarily for direct‑control (operator‑on‑machine) configurations but states that its principles can also be applied to remote‑control systems. The 2023 revision updated the scope and classification approach and extended applicability beyond seated operators.
Key topics and requirements
- Location and visibility of visual displays for the operator’s intended position (field of view, mounting, sightlines).
- Information classification process (typically dividing displayed information into classes by safety/operational importance — e.g., Class A/B/C or equivalent) and rules for prioritisation and presentation.
- Display and indicator characteristics: legibility, symbol identification, labelling, and distinguishability between indicators and gauges.
- Illumination and contrast requirements for day/night operation, including lighting control and glare minimisation.
- Colour distinctions and recommended colour usage for indicators, warnings and status (requirements for colour coding to reduce operator confusion).
- Guidance for multi‑function electronic displays versus discrete indicators and for integration with visibility aids or object‑detection systems.
- Informative annexes that illustrate visibility sectors and examples of applying the classification process.
Typical use and users
Primary users are OEMs and designers of earth‑moving machinery HMI (human–machine interface) systems, control‑system engineers, safety engineers, compliance teams, test laboratories and regulatory bodies. The standard is also used by fleet managers, machine specifiers and technical trainers to ensure displays meet ergonomic and safety expectations in construction, mining, quarrying and related industries.
Related standards
Standards commonly used together with ISO 6011 include ISO 6165 (definitions and classification of earth‑moving machinery) and ISO 16001 (object detection systems and visibility aids — performance requirements and tests). ISO 6011 also interfaces with other machine‑safety and visibility standards and ergonomics/HMI guidance from ISO technical committees.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 6011:2023 is an international standard that sets requirements and recommendations for visual displays and indicators used to present machine‑operation information to operators of earth‑moving machinery (4th edition, published 13 November 2023).
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers placement and visibility, a classification process for displayed information, display and indicator characteristics (legibility, labelling, illumination), colour distinctions for indicators and warnings, and guidance for both discrete indicators and multi‑function electronic displays. The principles can be applied to direct‑control and remote‑control configurations.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: OEMs, HMI and control‑system designers, safety and compliance engineers, test laboratories, regulators, fleet/specification managers and trainers in construction, mining and related sectors.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: Current — the 2023 (4th) edition replaces the 2003 edition (ISO 6011:2003) and is the active edition published by ISO on 13 November 2023.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: ISO 6011 is one of several standards addressing earth‑moving machinery under ISO/TC 127; it relates to standards covering machine types and vocabulary (ISO 6165), visibility aids and object detection (ISO 16001) and other performance, safety and ergonomic documents for construction and mining machinery.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Earth‑moving machinery, visual display, indicators, information classification, HMI, operator display, visibility, colour coding, ISO 6011:2023.
