Full title and description

Powered industrial trucks and tractors — Brake performance and component strength. This International Standard specifies performance criteria, test methods, control requirements and component strength provisions for braking systems fitted to powered industrial trucks, industrial tractors, burden carriers and industrial trucks handling freight containers.

Abstract

This standard defines brake performance requirements and standardized test methods to verify braking effectiveness and the mechanical strength of brake components for newly manufactured powered industrial trucks and related tractors. It includes controls and control-force limits, and gives exclusions (for example loss of electrical power assistance and emergency-shutdown braking are not covered).

General information

  • Status: Published (International Standard).
  • Publication date: 2020 (Edition 3, published January 2020).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 53.060 (Industrial trucks).
  • Edition / version: Edition 3 (2020).
  • Number of pages: 12 pages (ISO edition). National/adopted versions (for example BS ISO 6292:2020) may include national front matter and differ in page count (BS adoption shown as 22 pages).

Scope

The standard applies to brake systems fitted to: powered industrial trucks of all capacities; towing and pushing tractors (industrial tractors) up to and including 66 750 N drawbar pull; burden carriers; and industrial trucks handling freight containers, as defined in ISO 5053‑1. It specifies performance requirements, test methods, control, control forces and component strength for newly manufactured trucks. Loss of electrical power or other power assistance and braking used solely in emergency shutdown situations are excluded.

Key topics and requirements

  • Performance criteria for service braking under specified load and test conditions.
  • Standardized test methods and procedures to verify braking performance and consistency.
  • Requirements for control layout and maximum/control forces for brake actuation.
  • Component strength requirements and tests for brake parts to ensure mechanical integrity.
  • Defined exclusions: loss of power assistance and emergency-shutdown braking are outside the scope.

Typical use and users

Used by OEMs and manufacturers of powered industrial trucks and tractors, test laboratories, certification and conformity-assessment bodies, design and safety engineers, and procurement/specification teams to ensure braking performance and component durability meet internationally recognized criteria.

Related standards

Closely related to ISO 5053 (definitions and classification for industrial trucks) and other ISO/TC 110 standards addressing safety and performance of industrial trucks. ISO 6292:2020 replaces ISO 6292:2008; national adoptions include BS ISO 6292:2020 and DIN ISO 6292 (national publications based on ISO 6292:2020).

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 6292:2020 is an international standard that sets performance, testing and component-strength requirements for brake systems on powered industrial trucks and related tractors.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers service braking performance, specified test methods, control and control-force requirements, and mechanical strength tests for brake components installed on newly manufactured powered industrial trucks, industrial tractors (within specified drawbar pull limits), burden carriers and container-handling trucks. It excludes loss-of-power-assistance scenarios and emergency-shutdown braking.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Vehicle manufacturers, component suppliers, test laboratories, certification bodies, design and safety engineers, and specifiers who need to demonstrate or verify brake performance and component integrity for compliance and product development.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 6292:2020 is the current published edition (Edition 3, published January 2020). It supersedes ISO 6292:2008. National adoptions (for example BS ISO 6292:2020) exist and may include national forewords or additional pages.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: It is part of the body of ISO standards under ISO/TC 110 (Industrial trucks) and is linked to other ISO standards covering definitions, safety, stability and verification tests for industrial trucks (for example ISO 5053 series and related ISO/TC 110 outputs).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Powered industrial trucks; industrial tractors; brake performance; component strength; test methods; control forces; ISO 6292; industrial trucks safety.
