Full title and description
Fire containment — Elements of building construction — Part 1: Ventilation ducts. This International Standard specifies a standardized test method for determining the fire resistance of vertical and horizontal ventilation ducts, examining duct behaviour when exposed to fire from the outside (duct A) and when fire originates inside the duct (duct B). It is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 834-1.
Abstract
This document defines a method to assess the fire resistance performance of ventilation ducts under standardized fire conditions. The test procedure covers both external exposure (duct A) and internal exposure (duct B) and sets out specimen conditions, test exposures and performance evaluation under the ISO 834-1 fire curve. Annex A provides general guidance and background information. The standard also lists specific exclusions (for example, ducts whose fire performance depends on a ceiling, ducts with fire dampers at fire separations, two- or three-sided ducts, and kitchen extract ducts which are covered in ISO 6944-2).

Scope
ISO 6944-1:2024 specifies a test method for determining the fire resistance of vertical and horizontal ventilation ducts under standardized fire conditions. The scope covers tests for ducts exposed to fire externally (duct A) and internally (duct B) and is intended for use with ISO 834-1. The standard explicitly excludes: a) ducts whose fire resistance depends on ceiling performance; b) ducts containing fire dampers at fire separation penetrations; c) doors of inspection openings unless included in the tested duct; d) two-sided or three-sided ducts; e) the fixing of suspension devices to floors or walls; and f) kitchen extract ducts (see ISO 6944-2). Annex A provides guidance and background.
Key topics and requirements
- Standardized fire-resistance test method for ventilation ducts (vertical and horizontal).
- Two primary exposure modes defined: external fire exposure (duct A) and internal fire exposure (duct B).
- Reference to the ISO 834-1 standard fire curve for test temperature/time exposure.
- Specification of test specimen preparation, mounting, boundary conditions and instrumentation necessary to evaluate performance.
- Definition of performance criteria for fire containment under the test conditions and applicable exclusions (see Scope).
Typical use and users
This standard is used by fire-test laboratories, manufacturers of ventilation ducts and HVAC systems, fire safety engineers, building designers, certification and conformity-assessment bodies, and regulatory/code authorities when verifying or specifying the fire-resistance performance of ductwork within buildings.
Related standards
Standards referenced or closely related to ISO 6944-1:2024 include ISO 834-1 (standard fire curve and exposure conditions) and ISO 6944-2 (special provisions for kitchen extract ducts). National and regional test standards for ductwork fire resistance (for example standards used in specific jurisdictions) may also be relevant when comparing or implementing test results.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 6944-1:2024 is an International Standard that specifies a laboratory test method for determining the fire-resistance performance of ventilation ducts under standardized fire conditions.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers test procedures, specimen configuration and performance evaluation for vertical and horizontal ventilation ducts exposed to fire from outside (duct A) and from inside the duct (duct B). It is used together with ISO 834-1 and lists specific exclusions (for example kitchen extract ducts are covered in Part 2).
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Testing laboratories, duct and HVAC manufacturers, fire protection engineers, building designers, certification bodies and regulators use this standard to specify or verify duct fire-resistance performance.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 6944-1:2024 is the current edition (Edition 2, published 26 June 2024). It replaces and revises the earlier ISO 6944-1:2008 (and its amendment). The 2008 edition and amendment were withdrawn when the 2024 edition was published.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes. ISO 6944 is a multi-part series addressing fire containment elements of building construction; Part 1 covers ventilation ducts and Part 2 addresses kitchen extract ducts. The standard also cross-references ISO 834-1 for the standard fire exposure curve.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: fire containment, ventilation ducts, fire resistance testing, duct A, duct B, ISO 834-1, HVAC, building services, fire performance.
