Full title and description

ISO 7817-1:2024 — Building information modelling — Level of information need — Part 1: Concepts and principles. This international standard defines concepts and principles for specifying the level of information need and the characteristics of information deliveries when using Building Information Modelling (BIM), to support consistent, purpose‑driven information exchanges across the life cycle of built assets.

Abstract

This document specifies a methodology and terminology to describe and agree levels of information need (LOIN) and information deliveries for BIM-based projects. It defines characteristics for different levels of detail and extent of information (geometry, alphanumeric data and documentation), gives guidance on specifying information requirements by purpose, milestone, actor and object, and applies across the full asset life cycle from strategic planning through design, construction, operation, maintenance, refurbishment and end-of-life.

General information

  • Status: Published.
  • Publication date: June 2024 (Edition 1).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 35.240.67; 91.010.01 (applications of IT in building and construction; building and civil engineering).
  • Edition / version: Edition 1 (ISO 7817-1:2024).
  • Number of pages: 23 (ISO published document).

Scope

Specifies concepts and principles to establish a methodology for stating level of information need and information deliveries in a consistent way for BIM-based information exchanges. The standard is applicable to any built asset and to all stages of the asset life cycle — strategic planning, design, engineering, documentation, construction, operation, maintenance, refurbishment, repair and end-of-life — and is intended to be neutral with respect to classification systems, software tools and exchange formats.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definitions and concepts for Level of Information Need (LOIN): purpose-led specification of who needs what information, when and why.
  • Characteristics for different information types: guidance for geometrical information, alphanumeric attributes and supporting documentation, including scope, granularity and verifiability.
  • Structure for specifying information deliveries: identification of actors, milestones, object breakdowns and information delivery requirements to enable consistent exchanges.
  • Principles for objective verification and use in contractual/exchange documentation (e.g., EIRs, BEPs, MIDPs).
  • Notes on implementation and future guidance: a Part 2 (guidance for application) has been defined as an AWI to provide examples and application guidance.

Typical use and users

Used by clients/owners, appointing parties, BIM managers, project information managers, designers, contractors, asset managers, software vendors and standards practitioners to define, request and verify the information to be exchanged during projects and asset operations. It is referenced in EIRs, BEPs, contracts and information delivery specifications where objective, purpose-driven information requirements are needed.

Related standards

Closely aligned with the ISO 19650 series (information management using BIM) and with regional/adopted versions (EN/BS/UNE translations). ISO 7817-1:2024 replaces or supersedes earlier regional documents on required level of information (for example EN 17412-1), and national adoptions (EN ISO / UNE-EN / DIN EN publications) reflect that transition. Part 2 (guidance for application) is under development as an ISO AWI.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 7817-1:2024 is an international standard that defines concepts and principles for specifying the Level of Information Need (LOIN) and for describing the expected information deliveries when using BIM.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers a methodology and terminology to state what information (geometry, alphanumeric data, documentation) is needed by which party, at which milestone, and to what level of detail and verifiability across the whole asset life cycle.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Clients/owners, appointing parties, BIM and information managers, designers, contractors, asset managers, and software/tool vendors use it to define, request, manage and verify information deliveries in projects and asset operation.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 7817-1:2024 is published and current (Edition 1, June 2024). It supersedes earlier regional documents addressing required level of information (for example EN 17412-1) where those have been withdrawn in favor of the ISO text.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — Part 1 defines concepts and principles. A Part 2 (guidance for application) has been prepared as an ISO AWI to provide practical application guidance and examples; other related BIM standards (notably the ISO 19650 series) provide complementary information-management requirements.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Level of Information Need (LOIN), information delivery, BIM, information requirements, EIR, MIDP, geometry, alphanumeric data, documentation, lifecycle.
