Full title and description
Geometrical product specifications (GPS) — Dimensional and geometrical tolerances for moulded parts — Part 4: Rules and general tolerances for castings using profile tolerancing in a general datum system. This standard defines the rules, conventions and general tolerances for applying profile tolerancing to castings where a general datum system remains on the final part; it also covers machining allowances and draft angles and the graphic presentation of those requirements in technical product documentation.
Abstract
ISO 8062-4:2023 specifies rules for geometrical dimensioning and tolerancing of final moulded parts and parts machined from moulded parts, including the use of surface-profile tolerances referenced to a general datum system, the presentation and proportions of graphical symbols, machining allowances and draft/taper angles for castings in all cast metals and alloys. It establishes presentation conventions for 2D drawings and is also applicable to 3D applications where the indicated datum system is retained on the finished part.

Scope
Applies to the specification of general geometrical tolerances for castings using surface-profile tolerancing referenced to a general datum system that remains on the finished part. The standard covers presentation rules and graphical symbols for indicating completeness of moulded features, profile tolerancing rules, machining allowances and draft (taper) angles for cast parts produced from all cast metals and alloys. It is not applicable when cast datum surfaces are removed by machining or when no datum system remains on the final part.
Key topics and requirements
- Rules and conventions for applying surface-profile tolerances in a general datum system.
- Definition and presentation of graphical symbols and their proportions for indicating feature completeness and tolerancing on drawings.
- General geometrical tolerance grades and guidance for selecting profile tolerances appropriate to cast parts.
- Specification of machining allowances (recommended grades) and draft/taper angles for castings.
- Application notes clarifying when the standard is not applicable (e.g., machined datum surfaces absent on final part).
- Guidance for use on 2D technical drawings and transferability to 3D product data environments.
Typical use and users
Used by design engineers, foundry and casting engineers, drawing and CAD specialists, quality and inspection teams, and manufacturing engineers who specify or verify dimensional and geometrical requirements on cast components. Also used by standards & compliance staff when preparing or reviewing technical product documentation for cast parts.
Related standards
ISO 8062-4:2023 is part of the ISO 8062 series for moulded and cast parts; related parts include ISO 8062-1 (vocabulary), ISO/TS 8062-2 (rules), and ISO 8062-3 (general dimensional and geometrical tolerances and machining allowances using ± tolerances). ISO 8062-4 (2017) has been withdrawn and replaced by this 2023 edition.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 8062-4:2023 is an ISO international standard that sets rules and general tolerances for castings using profile tolerancing referenced to a general datum system; it also covers related graphical presentation and machining allowance guidance.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers profile-based geometrical tolerancing for castings, the use and presentation of datum systems and symbols on drawings, machining allowances and draft/taper angles, and conventions for applying these requirements on 2D drawings and compatible 3D data. It excludes cases where cast datum surfaces are machined away.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Design and CAD engineers, foundry/casting engineers, manufacturing engineers, inspection and quality staff, and document controllers who prepare or check technical product documentation for cast parts.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 8062-4:2023 is the current edition (published May 5, 2023) and supersedes ISO 8062-4:2017 (the earlier edition was withdrawn when the 2023 edition was published).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 8062 is a multi-part series addressing dimensional and geometrical tolerances for moulded (cast) parts; related parts include ISO 8062-1 (vocabulary), ISO/TS 8062-2 (rules), ISO 8062-3 (general tolerances using ± tolerances) and others in the series.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Profile tolerancing, datum system, machining allowance, draft angle, castings, moulded parts, GPS, dimensional tolerances, graphical symbols.
