Full title and description

Short‑circuit currents — Calculation of effects — Part 2: Examples of calculation. This IEC Technical Report provides worked examples that illustrate the application of the calculation procedures for mechanical and thermal effects of short‑circuit currents given in IEC 60865‑1.

Abstract

IEC TR 60865‑2:2015 (2nd edition) is an explanatory companion to IEC 60865‑1 showing step‑by‑step calculation examples for a variety of conductor arrangements (rigid and flexible), arrangements with droppers, vertical cable connections and cases involving automatic reclosure. The 2015 edition cancels and replaces the 1994 edition and revises examples, conductor configurations and some recommendations while keeping the calculation basis of IEC 60865‑1 unchanged.

General information

  • Status: Published (Technical Report).
  • Publication date: 22 April 2015.
  • Publisher: International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
  • ICS / categories: 17.220.01; 29.240.20.
  • Edition / version: Edition 2.0 (2015).
  • Number of pages: 83 pages.

Scope

This Technical Report demonstrates the practical application of the calculation methods and definitions given in IEC 60865‑1 by presenting numerical, worked examples of mechanical (forces, displacements, tensile and foundation loads) and thermal effects for a range of conductor systems and short‑circuit scenarios. It is intended as an explanatory, example‑driven supplement and does not change the normative calculation procedures in IEC 60865‑1. The TR also incorporates revisions to examples and certain recommendations compared with the 1994 edition.

Key topics and requirements

  • Worked calculation examples applying IEC 60865‑1 methods to rigid and flexible conductor arrangements.
  • Computation of electromagnetic forces, short‑circuit tensile forces, span displacements and dynamic sag during and after faults.
  • Examples addressing configurations with mid‑span droppers, vertical cable connections and multi‑conductor bundles.
  • Consideration of automatic reclosure sequences and their influence on mechanical loads for rigid conductors.
  • Recommendations for foundation and support loads resulting from tensile forces and conductor displacements.
  • Note: the subclause on determination of the thermal equivalent short‑circuit current was removed from this TR and is covered by IEC 60909‑0.

Typical use and users

Used by power‑system design engineers, transmission and distribution utilities, substation and overhead‑line designers, standards committees, testing laboratories and educators. The TR helps practitioners apply the normative methods of IEC 60865‑1 to real‑world layouts by following worked examples and recommended assumptions.

Related standards

Primary related: IEC 60865‑1 (Definitions and calculation methods). Other related publications include IEC 60909‑0 (short‑circuit current calculation — thermal equivalent current referenced in the TR), IEC 60949 and IEC 61660‑2 for related short‑circuit and thermal limit considerations. IEC TR 60865‑2 is an explanatory part of the IEC 60865 series and complements IEC 60865‑1.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: IEC TR 60865‑2:2015 is a Technical Report titled "Short‑circuit currents — Calculation of effects — Part 2: Examples of calculation" that provides worked examples illustrating the methods of IEC 60865‑1.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers numerical, step‑by‑step examples for calculating mechanical and thermal effects of short circuits on various conductor systems (rigid and flexible conductors, droppers, vertical connections), including considerations for automatic reclosure and support/foundation loads.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Power engineers, overhead‑line and substation designers, utilities, testing and certification bodies, and standards developers use the TR to see practical applications of IEC 60865‑1 calculation methods.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: Edition 2.0 (published 22 April 2015) is the current IEC TR for part 2 and it replaced the 1994 edition; the IEC webstore lists the 2015 TR as the active edition.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is Part 2 of the IEC 60865 series. Part 1 (IEC 60865‑1) contains definitions and calculation methods; Part 2 supplies worked examples.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Short‑circuit currents, calculation of effects, examples, mechanical forces, tensile force, conductor sag, thermal effects, IEC 60865.
