Full title and description
BS EN IEC 62153-4-16:2021 — Metallic cables and other passive components — Test methods. Part 4-16: Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) — Extension of the frequency range to higher frequencies for transfer impedance and to lower frequencies for screening attenuation measurements using the triaxial set-up. This is the British adoption of IEC 62153-4-16:2021 (including the 2023 corrigendum / amendment adopted into the EN/BS version).
Abstract
This part specifies a method to extrapolate measured transfer impedance to higher frequencies and screening attenuation to lower frequencies when tests are performed with the triaxial cell (triaxial set-up) in accordance with related IEC 62153 triaxial test parts. It is intended for homogeneous screens (screens whose transfer impedance is directly proportional to length) but the method accommodates a variety of frequency behaviours. The published text of the IEC standard and its corrigendum (2023) provide the precise formulas and measurement conditions.

Scope
The standard defines a validated method to extend the frequency limits of triaxial-set-up measurements: it gives procedures to extrapolate transfer impedance results upward in frequency and screening-attenuation results downward in frequency. It applies to measurements made with the triaxial cell described in related parts of IEC 62153 and is targeted at homogeneous cable screens; the method includes the mathematical conversion formulas and conditions for application. The corrigendum updates/corrects specific formulae and clarifications.
Key topics and requirements
- Triaxial set-up (triaxial cell) measurement method and test arrangement for screening attenuation and transfer impedance.
- Procedure and formulae for extrapolating transfer impedance to higher frequencies and screening attenuation to lower frequencies.
- Applicability to homogeneous screens (transfer impedance ∝ length) and handling of different frequency behaviours of transfer impedance.
- Corrected/replaced conversion formula (corrigendum) to ensure validity for arbitrary load conditions and to fix errors in the original publication.
- Requirements for measurement conditions, calibration and traceability consistent with the IEC 62153 family (references to parts 4-3, 4-4 and 4-15).
Typical use and users
Used by EMC test laboratories, cable and shield manufacturers, R&D engineers, product compliance teams and test-equipment suppliers to characterise cable screening performance beyond directly measured frequency limits. Also used to harmonise test reporting when suppliers or regulators require extrapolated values from triaxial measurements.
Related standards
Part of the IEC 62153 series (metallic cables and passive component test methods). Commonly referenced companion parts include IEC 62153-4-3, IEC 62153-4-4 and IEC 62153-4-15 (triaxial test methods and procedures). The EN/BS adoption includes the EN amendment/corrigendum (2023) aligned with IEC Corrigendum 1.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: It is the British adoption (BS EN IEC 62153-4-16:2021) of the IEC standard that defines methods to extend the frequency range for transfer impedance and screening-attenuation measurements made with a triaxial test cell.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the measurement arrangements, extrapolation formulas and application conditions needed to report transfer impedance at higher frequencies and screening attenuation at lower frequencies than those directly measured with the triaxial set-up, including requirements for homogeneous screens and relevant measurement conditions.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: EMC/cable test laboratories, cable and shield manufacturers, compliance engineers, and test-equipment designers use it to characterise and report cable screening performance beyond measured frequency limits.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The IEC 62153-4-16 second edition (2021) is the current international text; a corrigendum (Corrigendum 1) was issued in November 2023 and incorporated into the EN/BS adoption published by BSI in December 2023. The BS adoption replaced the earlier BS IEC 62153-4-16:2016.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is one part of the IEC 62153 series on metallic cables and other passive component test methods; several other Part‑4 documents define specific triaxial test procedures referenced by this part.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Transfer impedance, screening attenuation, triaxial cell, EMC, cable shielding, homogeneous screen, extrapolation, IEC 62153.
