Full title and description
ISO 10047:2025 — Textiles — Determination of surface burning time of fabrics. Specifies a laboratory method to measure the surface burning time of textile fabrics that have a raised fibre surface (napped, pile, tufted, flocked or similar).
Abstract
This document specifies a method for the measurement of surface burning time of textile fabrics which have a raised fibre surface, i.e. a napped, pile, tufted, flocked or similar surface. The method provides a repeatable way to ignite the raised surface and time the downward spread of flame to a reference line for comparison and conformity assessment.

Scope
Applies to textile fabrics with a raised fibre surface and specifies a laboratory test method to determine the time taken for surface flame spread over such fabrics when ignited in a specified manner. The scope is limited to fabrics having napped, pile, tufted, flocked or similar raised surfaces and does not replace other fire-performance tests intended for different end-use conditions or larger-scale exposures.
Key topics and requirements
- Test objective: measure surface burning time of fabrics with raised fibre surfaces.
- Specimen type: fabrics with napped, pile, tufted, flocked or similar raised surfaces.
- Specimen mounting: vertically mounted specimens with defined support and reference line.
- Ignition procedure: controlled ignition of the raised surface near the top of the specimen and timing of flame spread to a reference mark.
- Recorded observations: flame spread time, after-flame/after-glow behaviour, presence of flaming debris or hole formation (where applicable).
- Intended outcome: reproducible, comparable surface burning time values for use in product assessment and regulatory or purchaser specifications.
(Summary of the method and principal requirements as described in the ISO publication.)
Typical use and users
Used by textile manufacturers, material and product test laboratories, conformity assessment bodies, product designers, fire-safety engineers, regulators and specifiers who need to evaluate or demonstrate the surface burning behaviour of raised-surface textile materials for safety, compliance or procurement requirements. Test laboratories offering textile flammability services commonly adopt this method where applicable.
Related standards
Standards addressing related flame/ignitability or limited flame-spread tests for textile and product applications include ISO 15025 (Protection against flame — limited flame spread test methods for textiles and protective clothing), ISO 11925-2 (single-flame source ignitability test used in reaction-to-fire classification systems), and vertically oriented specimen ignition tests referenced in textile burning-behaviour series (e.g., EN/ISO methods for vertically oriented specimens). These methods are complementary depending on product type and regulatory context.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 10047:2025 is an international standard that specifies a laboratory method to determine the surface burning time of textile fabrics that have a raised fibre surface (napped, pile, tufted, flocked or similar).
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the procedure for preparing and mounting specimens, how to apply a controlled ignition to the raised surface, what measurements and observations to record (flame-spread time, after-flame/after-glow, debris/hole formation where relevant) and how to report results for fabrics with raised surfaces.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Textile and upholstery manufacturers, independent testing laboratories, product safety engineers, conformity assessment bodies and regulators use this standard when assessing or specifying the surface burning behaviour of raised-surface textile materials.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 10047:2025 (Edition 2, published December 2025) is the current published version. It supersedes and replaces ISO 10047:1993, which was withdrawn when the new edition was published.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: ISO 10047 is part of the set of ISO test methods and publications addressing textile burning behaviour and reaction-to-fire testing; related documents include other ISO/EN test methods for ignitability and limited flame spread that are chosen according to product type and regulatory requirements.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Key keywords include surface burning time, flame spread, raised-surface fabrics, napped, pile, tufted, flocked, textile flammability, test method.
