Metal bellows expansion joints and seals. General specifications
Full title and description
GOST 27036-86 — "Компенсаторы и уплотнения сильфонные металлические. Общие технические условия" / "Metal bellows expansion joints and seals. General specifications". A national (interstate) standard originally approved by the USSR State Committee for Standards that defines technical requirements, test methods, marking, packaging, acceptance rules and operational guidance for metal bellows used as expansion joints and seals.
Abstract
GOST 27036-86 establishes general technical conditions for metal bellows expansion joints and metal bellows seals intended for hermetic connections and separation of fluid volumes where relative movement occurs. The standard sets out product parameters and dimensions, materials and fabrication requirements, safety and testing procedures (acceptance, qualification, periodic and type tests), marking, packaging, transportation and manufacturer guarantees, and gives instructions for use and reliability requirements. Certain installations (for example some underground tunnel-free installations and special military orders) are excluded from the scope.
General information
- Status: Active / Restored for use in the Russian Federation (restoration recorded by national bodies).
- Publication date: Approved 20 October 1986; date of official introduction 1 July 1988; restoration reference 5 March 2003 (Rosstandart decision).
- Publisher: USSR State Committee for Standards (Gosstandart); maintained subsequently by national standardization bodies (Rosstandart / EASC registry).
- ICS / categories: МКС (ICS) 17.120 (product group for bellows/compensators); OKP 36 9574.
- Edition / version: Original issue GOST 27036-86 (1986). Document subsequently issued with amendments (examples: amendments recorded in 1990 and early 1990s) and maintained in national registries.
- Number of pages: Approx. 79–80 pages (main text and normative appendices).
Scope
This standard applies to metal bellows used in expansion joints and to metal bellows seals intended for forming hermetic connections between relatively moving elements of mechanisms, devices and pipelines, and for separating volumes of liquids and gases where relative movement is present. It specifies technical requirements for design parameters, materials, manufacturing, acceptance and test regimes, marking, packaging, transport and operation. Exclusions include certain tunnel-free underground installations and special bellows produced under direct orders of defense authorities.
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and terminology for bellows, expansion joints and seals (cross-references to related GOST terminology standards).
- Main parameters and dimensional series (nominal diameters, pressure classes, allowable movements and travel ranges).
- Material and fabrication requirements for bellows, end fittings and welds, including selection of steels and corrosion‑resistant alloys.
- Design strength, stiffness and thermal-resistance criteria; allowable working pressure and temperature guidance.
- Safety requirements for manufacture, installation and operation (references to occupational and pressure-vessel safety rules).
- Testing regime: acceptance, qualification, periodic and type tests with required sample sizes and pass/fail criteria (strength, leak tightness, vibration and impact, life/cycle tests).
- Quality control, inspection and documentation requirements (factory tests, certificates, marking and traceability).
- Packaging, transportation and storage provisions to protect functionality and prevent damage during handling.
- Operational instructions and manufacturer guarantees, including recommended maintenance and inspection intervals and conditions for re-testing.
Typical use and users
Used by manufacturers of metal bellows and expansion joints, piping and pressure-system designers, procurement and quality departments, test laboratories, plant maintenance teams and engineering firms in industries such as power generation, oil & gas, petrochemical, chemical processing, shipbuilding, HVAC and other sectors where controlled compensation for thermal, mechanical or seismic movement in piping and equipment is required.
Related standards
Commonly associated and cross-referenced documents include GOST standards on terminology and related materials/testing (for example the GOST for bellows terms and definitions), national safety and welding standards, material standards for steels and alloys, and international equivalents or guidance such as ISO documents on metal bellows and regional EN standards for metal bellows expansion joints. Users should consult the normative references listed in the standard for precise cross‑references.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: GOST 27036-86 is an interstate (originally USSR) standard that sets general technical specifications for metal bellows used in expansion joints and for metal bellows seals, covering design parameters, materials, testing, marking, packaging and operation.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers product parameters and dimensions, material and fabrication requirements, safety provisions, acceptance/qualification/periodic/type test procedures, marking and documentation, packaging, transport, storage and instructions for use and guarantees from manufacturers. It excludes certain special installations and defense‑ordered special designs.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Manufacturers, designers and engineers of piping and pressure systems, test laboratories, procurement and plant maintenance groups in industries such as power, oil & gas, petrochemical, shipbuilding and industrial process plants.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The original standard was approved in 1986 and introduced in 1988. It has been maintained in national registries and recorded as restored/active for use in the Russian Federation under subsequent administrative actions. Users should check their national/regional standards registry or the issuing body for the most current status, amendments or replacements before relying on it for new designs or procurement.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is linked by topic to other GOST documents addressing terminology, materials and safety (for example the GOST on bellows terms/definitions and various material and safety GOSTs). It should be used together with referenced normative documents listed in its normative references section.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Metal bellows, expansion joint, bellows seal, compensator, hermetic connection, acceptance tests, qualification tests, marking, packaging, GOST 27036-86.
