Full title and description
St IEC 61547-2020 — Equipment for general lighting purposes — EMC immunity requirements. This publication is the third edition of IEC 61547 and sets electromagnetic immunity (EMC) test levels and requirements for lighting equipment within the scope of IEC TC 34, including lamps, luminaires, controlgear and end-user replaceable modules. It updates and replaces the 2009 edition and incorporates revised test levels and clarified module/host testing arrangements.
Abstract
IEC 61547:2020 specifies immunity requirements intended to ensure satisfactory operation of lighting equipment in environments covered by generic residential, commercial and light-industrial immunity requirements, while addressing lighting‑specific engineering practice. The 2020 edition extends scope to end‑user replaceable modules, clarifies module testing in a host system, raises certain ESD and surge levels for road/street lighting and introduces new ESD testing under normal operation and handling conditions. A companion technical report (IEC TR 61547‑1:2020) describes an objective light flickermeter and voltage‑fluctuation immunity test method.

Scope
This standard applies to equipment for general lighting purposes within the remit of IEC TC 34 — for example lamps, luminaires, auxiliaries, LED modules and end‑user replaceable modules — and defines immunity requirements so the lighting function operates correctly in domestic, commercial and light‑industrial environments. It excludes components/modules that are not end‑user replaceable and products whose RF‑immunity requirements are already addressed by other product standards; in multi‑function equipment the lighting function alone is subject to the requirements. Wireless control functions for lighting are within scope only to the extent of the lighting control function’s immunity (radio performance is not assessed by this document).
Key topics and requirements
- Defined immunity test levels and performance criteria tailored to lighting equipment (based on generic immunity principles but adapted for lighting practice).
- Mandatory electromagnetic‑immunity tests covering ESD (electrostatic discharge), surge, electrical fast transients (EFT/bursts), radiated and conducted RF immunity, power‑frequency magnetic fields and voltage dips/interruption effects (references to the IEC 61000‑4‑x test family are used).
- Extension of scope and specific rules for end‑user replaceable modules and module testing when installed in a host system.
- Increased ESD and surge test levels for road and street lighting equipment and the introduction of ESD testing under normal operation and handling conditions.
- Removal of certain line‑to‑ground surge tests for small self‑ballasted lamps (≤ 25 W) compared with the previous edition.
- Normative linkage to basic/generic immunity standards (e.g., IEC 61000‑6‑1) and to the IEC 61000‑4 series for individual test methods; a technical report (IEC TR 61547‑1:2020) provides an objective flickermeter and voltage‑fluctuation immunity test method.
Typical use and users
Manufacturers and designers of lamps, luminaires, LED modules and lighting controlgear use IEC 61547:2020 to define immunity requirements for product development and market compliance. Test houses and EMC laboratories use it as the test specification when performing immunity testing on lighting products. Regulatory bodies, procurement/specification teams and compliance engineers refer to it when setting product acceptance criteria or integrating lighting equipment into larger installations.
Related standards
IEC 61547 is linked to and references the IEC 61000 series for immunity test methods (IEC 61000‑4‑x family) and to generic immunity standards such as IEC 61000‑6‑1. A companion technical report, IEC TR 61547‑1:2020, covers objective flickermeter and voltage‑fluctuation immunity testing. National and regional adoptions exist (for example EN/EN IEC adoptions based on IEC 61547:2020).

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: IEC 61547:2020 is an international standard specifying electromagnetic‑immunity requirements for equipment for general lighting purposes (lamps, luminaires, modules and related lighting apparatus). It is the third edition and replaces IEC 61547:2009.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It sets immunity test levels and performance criteria tailored to lighting products, prescribes how to test modules (including end‑user replaceable modules) in host systems, and defines specific ESD, surge and other immunity test requirements. A related technical report (IEC TR 61547‑1:2020) addresses objective flicker measurement and voltage‑fluctuation immunity testing.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Product designers and manufacturers of lighting equipment, EMC test laboratories, compliance engineers, specifiers and procurement organizations concerned with lighting product immunity performance.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: IEC 61547:2020 is the current edition (published 26 March 2020) and supersedes IEC 61547:2009. Stability/validity information is indicated in IEC records; national/regional adoptions may carry later publication dates for identical text.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It references the IEC 61000 immunity test family and is accompanied by IEC TR 61547‑1:2020 (objective flickermeter and voltage‑fluctuation immunity test method). Regional/adopted versions (EN/EN IEC variants) are published by national bodies.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: EMC immunity, lighting equipment, ESD, surge, flicker, radiated immunity, IEC 61547:2020, LED modules, luminaires.
