Full title and description
IEC 62541-13:2025 — OPC unified architecture - Part 13: Aggregates. Defines the OPC UA information model, data types and service semantics used to represent, compute and expose aggregated values (time-weighted averages, totals, minima/maxima, counts, duration-in-state, percent-good/bad, etc.) and related quality/status handling for historians and real-time servers.
Abstract
This third edition (2025) is a technical revision of Part 13 that clarifies aggregate computations, status-bit handling (Raw, Partial), interpolation/extrapolation rules and examples. Annex A provides programmatically produced aggregate examples (distributed as CSV) to support implementation and certification testing. The edition cancels and replaces IEC 62541-13:2020.
General information
- Status: Published / Definitive.
- Publication date: December 2025 (official publication recorded in December 2025).
- Publisher: International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
- ICS / categories: 25.040.40; 35.100.05.
- Edition / version: Edition 3.0 (2025).
- Number of pages: 128 (edition 2025 PDF/page count as published by national bodies).
Scope
Specifies the information model and supporting structures for Aggregates in OPC UA: node and type definitions (AggregateFunction, AggregateConfiguration), parameters and filters for processed reads and monitored-item aggregates (AggregateFilter, ReadProcessedDetails), semantics and algorithms for a standardized set of aggregate functions, quality and status-code rules (including handling of uncertain data), and normative examples to aid conformance and testing. The scope targets interoperability between OPC UA servers, historians and analytics consumers for consistent aggregate computation and representation.
Key topics and requirements
- Aggregate information model: definitions for AggregateFunction objects, AggregateConfiguration and related AddressSpace structures.
- Aggregate request details: MonitoredItem AggregateFilter and ReadProcessedDetails for requesting processed/historic aggregates.
- Standard aggregate functions and semantics: TimeAverage, TimeAverage2, Total, Total2, Minimum, Maximum, Range, Count, DurationInState, Start/End/Delta, StandardDeviation/Variance, PercentGood/PercentBad, WorstQuality, etc.
- Status and quality handling: rules for computing StatusCodes and Aggregate Information Bits (Raw, Partial), treatment of uncertain/bad data and operation-level result codes.
- Interpolation/extrapolation rules: clarifications on sloped vs stepped interpolation and how interpolation affects aggregate results.
- Normative examples and certification alignment: programmatic examples (Annex A, CSV) and corrections to prior examples to support interoperable implementations and testing.
Typical use and users
Used by OPC UA server and historian implementers, industrial automation vendors, system integrators, analytics and IIoT platform developers, and test/certification tool authors. Typical applications include consistent historian aggregation for SCADA/DCS, KPI and analytics pipelines, quality-aware time-series computations and interoperability testing between historians and OPC UA clients.
Related standards
Part of the IEC 62541 (OPC UA) series. Commonly referenced companion parts include Part 3 (Address Space Model), Part 4 (Services), Part 10 (Programs), Part 12 (Discovery and Global Services), Part 20 (File Transfer), Part 22 (Base Network Model), Part 23 (Common Reference Types) and Part 100 (Devices) for device integration profiles. FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: IEC 62541-13:2025 is the OPC Unified Architecture specification for Aggregates, defining the information model, algorithms and semantics for computing and exposing aggregated values within OPC UA.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers node/type definitions for aggregates, request/filter structures for processed reads and monitored items, a catalog of standard aggregate functions with precise computation rules, status/quality handling, interpolation/extrapolation behavior and normative examples to aid implementation and certification.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: OPC UA server and historian implementers, system integrators, industrial software vendors, analytics platform developers and certification/test-tool authors who need standardized, quality-aware aggregate computations and interoperability.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: This 2025 edition is the current edition for Part 13 and cancels and replaces IEC 62541-13:2020 (the 2020 edition was withdrawn following publication of the 2025 revision).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is one part of the IEC 62541 series that together define the OPC UA specification (address space, services, profiles, models and device integration). Implementers will commonly refer to other parts in the series for a complete OPC UA implementation.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: OPC UA, Aggregates, historian, aggregate functions, AggregateFilter, ReadProcessedDetails, interpolation, status codes, percent-good, duration-in-state.
