Full title and description
ISO 10294-4:2001 — Fire resistance tests — Fire dampers for air distribution systems — Part 4: Test of thermal release mechanism. This part specifies the test requirements and procedures for the thermal release mechanism used in fire dampers (the thermal release only is subjected to the tests described).
Abstract
This document defines a method to test the behaviour, reliability and response characteristics of thermal release mechanisms intended for use in fire dampers tested according to ISO 10294-1. It covers requirement categories such as thermal release, response behaviour, faulty set-off, test apparatus, installation/conditioning, test procedure and the content of the test report (including an informative annex on reliability tests).
General information
- Status: Withdrawn (superseded by a later series revision).
- Publication date: April 2001 (First edition).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
- ICS / categories: 13.220.50; 91.140.30.
- Edition / version: Edition 1 (2001).
- Number of pages: 12 pages (ISO published PDF).
Scope
ISO 10294-4:2001 applies specifically to the thermal release mechanism of fire dampers used in air distribution systems; it does not cover the full damper assembly performance tests (these are addressed in ISO 10294-1 and related parts). The standard describes test apparatus, installation and conditioning, control of test conditions, detailed test procedures and reporting requirements for evaluating thermal release performance and reliability.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition and requirements for thermal release mechanisms (activation temperature/performance criteria).
- Response behaviour and acceptable operating characteristics under specified thermal conditions.
- Faulty set-off criteria and pass/fail conditions.
- Test apparatus and instrumentation required for thermal-release testing.
- Installation, conditioning, control of test conditions and detailed test procedure.
- Test report content and an informative annex on reliability tests.
Typical use and users
Used by test houses and fire testing laboratories, fire-damper manufacturers and component suppliers, certification and conformity assessment bodies, and engineers responsible for specifying and verifying fire containment in HVAC and air distribution systems. The part is intended to be used in conjunction with the other parts of the ISO 10294 series or its replacement series when evaluating damper systems.
Related standards
ISO 10294-4:2001 is one part of the ISO 10294 series on fire dampers (other parts cover full-damper tests and installation). ISO 10294-4:2001 and its amendment were later withdrawn and the fire-damper series was revised; the relevant new series standard is ISO 21925-1:2018 (Fire resistance tests — Fire dampers for air distribution systems — Part 1: Mechanical dampers), which consolidates and supersedes earlier parts. An amendment to ISO 10294-4 (Amd 1:2014) also exists but was withdrawn with the series revision.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 10294-4:2001 is an ISO test method that specifies how to test the thermal release mechanism used in fire dampers for air distribution systems.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers requirements and test procedures for thermal release mechanisms only (activation behaviour, response, faulty set-off, test apparatus, installation, control of conditions, reporting and reliability tests). Full damper performance is addressed in other parts of the series.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Manufacturers of fire-damper components, test laboratories, certification bodies and engineers specifying HVAC fire-safety components use this part to verify thermal-release performance.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 10294-4:2001 has been withdrawn; the ISO fire-damper standards were revised and reissued (see ISO 21925-1:2018 and related parts) which supersede the earlier 10294 series. An amendment (ISO 10294-4:2001/Amd 1:2014) was published but subsequently the series was revised and the amendment withdrawn along with the original.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it formed part of the ISO 10294 series on fire dampers (multiple parts). The series has since been restructured and the relevant material now appears in the ISO 21925 series (2018).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Fire resistance tests, fire dampers, thermal release mechanism, air distribution systems, test procedure, reliability.
