Full title and description

ISO 10508:2006 — Plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations — Guidance for classification and design. This International Standard provides guidance for classifying service conditions and for the design and evaluation of hot and cold water pressure systems that use plastics pipes and plastics or metal fittings; it applies to distribution systems for hot and cold water (including potable water) and to hot-water heating distribution under defined pressure and temperature classes. (Published 17 March 2006; amended by ISO 10508:2006/Amd 1:2018 in September 2018.)

Abstract

ISO 10508:2006 establishes a classification system for common service conditions of pressurized hot and cold water systems and gives a basis for the evaluation and design of thermoplastics pipes and fittings in relation to system performance requirements. The standard applies to plastics piping systems carrying potable and heating hot water under design pressures up to at least 10 bar at 20 °C and up to pressures appropriate to the application class at elevated temperatures. It covers system-level guidance rather than detailed material-specific test methods.

General information

  • Status: Published (confirmed).
  • Publication date: 17 March 2006 (Edition 2); Amendment 1 published September 2018.
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).

  • Edition / version: Edition 2 (2006) with Amendment 1:2018 (ISO 10508:2006/Amd 1:2018).
  • Number of pages: 9 pages (main document) + 1 page for Amendment 1.

Scope

Provides guidance for classification and design of plastics piping systems used in hot and cold water installations inside buildings and associated heating systems. It is intended for pressurized systems using thermoplastic pipes and plastic or metal fittings, covering design pressures and temperature classes for typical domestic and heating applications. The document sets out service-condition classes, system performance objectives and routes for assessing suitability of pipes and fittings against those classes.

Key topics and requirements

  • Classification system for common service conditions (application classes) in hot and cold water installations.
  • Guidance for design pressures and temperature ranges—applies up to at least 10 bar at 20 °C and corresponding pressures at elevated temperatures according to class.
  • Basis for evaluation of thermoplastic pipes and both plastic and metal fittings relative to system performance requirements.
  • Consideration of potable water applications and transport of hot water for heating.
  • System-level design guidance rather than prescriptive material specifications; intended to be used alongside material- and product-specific standards.
  • Reference to conformity assessment and compatibility with related ISO piping standards and amendments.

Typical use and users

Used by piping system designers, consulting and building services engineers, manufacturers of plastic pipes and fittings, product specifiers, testing and certification bodies, plumbing contractors, and regulatory authorities setting or referring to performance requirements for hot and cold water distribution systems in buildings.

Related standards

ISO 10508 forms part of the family of ISO standards for plastics piping systems developed by ISO/TC 138. Commonly referenced related standards include: ISO 15874 (plastics piping systems for hot and cold water — polypropylene (PP) series), ISO 21003 (multilayer piping systems for hot and cold water), ISO 17885 (mechanical fittings for pressure piping systems), ISO 10639 (GRP systems for water supply), ISO 8795 (migration assessment for plastics pipes and fittings), and other ISO/TC 138 parts and technical specifications covering pipe materials, fittings, joints, test methods and conformity assessment.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 10508:2006 is an ISO International Standard titled "Plastics piping systems for hot and cold water installations — Guidance for classification and design" that provides system-level guidance for classifying and designing hot and cold water piping systems made from plastics and using plastic or metal fittings.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers a classification system for common service conditions, guidance on design pressures and temperatures (including service up to at least 10 bar at 20 °C), and a basis for evaluating thermoplastic pipes and fittings against system performance requirements for potable water and heating distribution systems.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Piping system designers, manufacturers of plastic pipes and fittings, building services engineers, specifiers, testing and certification bodies, plumbing contractors and authorities responsible for compliance and product selection in building water systems.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The 2006 edition (Edition 2) is the current published version and has been confirmed in periodic review. It was amended by ISO 10508:2006/Amd 1:2018 (published September 2018). There is no later full replacement recorded as of the amendment; users should check the national/adopted standard or ISO catalogue for any subsequent revisions before relying on the standard for regulatory compliance.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes. ISO 10508 sits within the broader ISO/TC 138 portfolio covering plastics piping systems. It is intended to be used alongside material- and product-specific parts (for example ISO 15874 for polypropylene systems, ISO 21003 for multilayer systems, and other parts addressing pipes, fittings, joints, test methods and conformity assessment).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Key keywords include plastics piping, hot and cold water, potable water, design guidance, classification, thermoplastic pipes, fittings, pressure classes, ISO 10508.
