Full title and description
Plastics piping systems for the supply of gaseous fuels — Polyethylene (PE) — Part 2: Pipes. This international standard specifies the characteristics and test parameters for polyethylene (PE) pipes intended for buried and above-ground piping systems used to supply gaseous fuels, and defines types of PE pipes including plain PE, co‑extruded PE and PE with a peelable contiguous thermoplastic external coating.
Abstract
ISO 4437-2:2024 sets out material, dimensional and performance requirements and the test parameters for PE pipes used in gas distribution systems. It is intended to be used together with the other parts of the ISO 4437 series to ensure fitness for purpose of PE piping systems for gaseous fuels at design reference temperature and defined maximum operating pressures and temperature ranges.

Scope
Applies to PE pipes intended for use in piping systems for the supply of gaseous fuels, including plain PE pipes, PE pipes with co‑extruded PE layers (where PE layers have the same MRS rating) and PE pipes with a peelable contiguous thermoplastic external coating. The standard covers design/use conditions with a maximum operating pressure (MOP) up to and including 10 bar at the reference design temperature of 20 °C and an operating temperature range of −20 °C to 40 °C. It also specifies the test parameters for referenced test methods and references derating coefficients and related system requirements given in other parts of the ISO 4437 series.
Key topics and requirements
- Material and compound properties for polyethylene used to manufacture gas supply pipes (MRS-based design considerations).
- dimensional and marking requirements (outside diameters, identification stripes and colour requirements).
- Three pipe types covered: standard PE pipe, co‑extruded PE-layer pipes, and coated (peelable external layer) PE pipes (annexes provide details).
- Design limits: MOP up to and including 10 bar (reference 20 °C) and operating temperature range −20 °C to 40 °C; derating coefficients for higher temperatures are given in ISO 4437-5.
- Test parameters and test method conditions for mechanical performance, long‑term strength (creep), resistance to rapid crack propagation (RCP) and other required tests.
- Coordination with other parts of the ISO 4437 series for fittings, valves and joint fitness (joints and joint testing handled in other parts).
Typical use and users
Used by gas network designers, utilities, pipeline manufacturers and fabricators, test laboratories, certification bodies, regulatory authorities and procurement/specification engineers. Typical applications include buried distribution mains and service lines, where PE piping is chosen for corrosion resistance, flexibility and suitability for fusion-type joints and mechanical connections specified elsewhere in the series.
Related standards

The 2024 edition of ISO 4437-2 supersedes ISO 4437-2:2014.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 4437-2:2024 is the part of the ISO 4437 series that specifies requirements and test parameters for polyethylene (PE) pipes used in piping systems for the supply of gaseous fuels.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers material, dimensional, marking and performance requirements and the test parameters for PE pipes — including plain PE, co‑extruded PE layer pipes and PE pipes with a peelable thermoplastic external coating — intended for gas supply systems within specified pressure and temperature limits.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Gas utilities, pipeline and pipe manufacturers, design and specification engineers, test laboratories, certification bodies, installers and regulatory authorities involved with gas distribution systems.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: It is current. The 2024 edition (Edition 2, published 14 February 2024) replaces the previous 2014 edition (ISO 4437-2:2014).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 4437-2 is part of the ISO 4437 series for polyethylene piping systems for gaseous fuels and is intended to be used together with ISO 4437-1, ISO 4437-3, ISO 4437-4 and ISO 4437-5, which cover general requirements, fittings, valves and fitness for purpose of the system respectively.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Polyethylene, PE pipes, gas distribution, MOP, MRS, RCP, co‑extruded, coated pipe, test parameters.
