Full title and description
St ISO 5389-2005 — Turbocompressors — Performance test code. This international standard specifies standardized provisions for the preparation, procedure, evaluation and assessment of performance tests on turbocompressors (machines in which inlet, compression and discharge are continuous flow processes). It is intended to be used for acceptance testing to demonstrate fulfillment of contractual performance guarantees.
Abstract
ISO 5389:2005 applies to performance tests on turbocompressors of all types and provides requirements for test preparation, instrumentation, test procedures, data reduction, corrections and reporting. The standard excludes fans, high-vacuum pumps and jet-type compressors with moving drive components. Acceptance tests based on this code are used to verify contractual guarantees and to ensure comparable, reproducible performance results between manufacturers and test laboratories.

Scope
The standard applies to performance tests on turbocompressors of all types where inlet, compression and discharge are continuous flow processes. It defines the recommended test conditions, required measurements and calculation methods for determining performance parameters such as mass or volumetric flow, pressure rise, power, efficiency and corrected performance. The standard does not apply to fans or high-vacuum pumps, nor to jet-type compressors with moving drive components.
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and classification of turbocompressors and associated terminology.
- Requirements for test rig configuration, instrumentation and calibration.
- Standardized test procedures for steady-state performance measurement.
- Measurement of inlet and discharge conditions (pressure, temperature, flow) and driver power.
- Correction methods for reference conditions and gas composition.
- Estimation and reporting of measurement uncertainty and repeatability.
- Data reduction, graphical representation of performance maps and acceptance criteria.
- Test report content and format to document results and contractual compliance.
Typical use and users
ISO 5389:2005 is typically used by turbocompressor manufacturers, independent test laboratories, end customers (oil & gas, power generation, process industries), procurement and quality departments, design and performance engineers, and certification bodies. It is used for factory acceptance testing, performance verification during commissioning, contractual acceptance tests and comparative performance benchmarking.
Related standards
Related and complementary documents include the previous edition ISO 5389:1992 (withdrawn and replaced), standards addressing performance testing of other compressor types (for example standards for positive-displacement compressors), acoustics/noise test codes for compressors, and regional/adopted versions such as national adoptions (e.g., BS ISO 5389). Safety and design standards for compressors and vacuum pumps (for example safety-related EN/ISO publications) are also commonly referenced alongside ISO 5389 in procurement and test specifications.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 5389:2005 is an international performance test code that specifies how to perform, evaluate and report performance tests on turbocompressors.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers test preparation, instrumentation, measurement procedures, data reduction, corrections to reference conditions, uncertainty estimation and required test-report content for turbocompressors. It excludes fans, high-vacuum pumps and certain jet-type compressors.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Manufacturers, independent test laboratories, end users in industries such as oil & gas and power generation, procurement and quality engineers, and certification bodies use the standard for acceptance and performance verification.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 5389:2005 is the second edition (published 15 December 2005) and has been maintained through periodic ISO confirmation reviews. The 1992 edition was superseded by the 2005 edition.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It is a stand-alone performance test code for turbocompressors, but it sits within the family of compressor-related standards and is often used together with other ISO and regional standards covering safety, acoustics and testing of other compressor types.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: turbocompressor, performance test, acceptance test, test code, flow correction, measurement uncertainty, compressor performance, ISO 5389
