Full title and description

St ISO 55013-2024 — Asset management — Guidance on the management of data assets. This International Standard (Edition 1, 2024) provides guidance to organizations on identifying, managing and sustaining the usefulness of data when treating data as an asset in support of asset management objectives and wider organizational objectives. It is intended to complement the ISO 55000-series by focusing specifically on the characteristics, governance, quality, stewardship and life‑cycle considerations of data assets used in asset management.

Abstract

This document gives guidance on managing data to support an organization in meeting its asset management objectives and, by extension, its organizational objectives. It is applicable to any organization regardless of type or size. The standard addresses factors that increase and sustain the usefulness of data assets but does not provide methodologies to derive or appraise financial value for data assets or prescribe financial valuation techniques.

Scope

ISO 55013:2024 provides guidance on the management of data assets relevant to asset management — for example asset registers, asset histories, condition and performance data, market and customer data, and other information used to make asset‑related decisions. The scope includes guidance on defining data asset usefulness, data quality and governance, stakeholders and types of value, processes for acquiring, maintaining, preserving, archiving and deleting asset data, and alignment with related asset management requirements. The standard explicitly excludes methods for deriving financial valuation of data assets.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition and characterization of data assets in the context of asset management (what constitutes a data asset and its attributes).
  • Guidance on assessing and increasing the usefulness of data assets to meet asset management objectives.
  • Identification of types of value data assets can provide (operational, strategic, analytical, compliance) and relevant stakeholders for each type.
  • Data quality management: dimensions, measurement, remediation and continuous improvement.
  • Data governance and stewardship roles, responsibilities, policies and decision‑making interfaces with asset management systems.
  • Lifecycle guidance for asset data including acquisition, storage, metadata, interoperability, preservation, archiving and secure deletion.
  • Considerations for tools and technologies (analytics, digital twins, records systems) to support data asset use, interoperability and digital preservation.
  • Alignment and integration with ISO 55001 requirements and other ISO 55000‑series guidance documents to support consistent asset management practice.

The above topics are guidance-oriented (informative) rather than prescriptive requirements; ISO 55013 supplements ISO 55001 by providing good practices and considerations specific to data.

Typical use and users

Primary users include asset managers, data managers and stewards, IT and information governance teams, system architects, reliability and maintenance teams, risk and compliance officers, management representatives responsible for asset management systems, consultants and certification bodies (for contextual alignment). Organizations use ISO 55013 to improve the quality, availability and governance of asset‑related data, to inform decision‑making, and to integrate data considerations into their asset management systems and processes.

Related standards

ISO 55013 is part of the ISO 55000 family. Key related standards include ISO 55000 (overview and principles), ISO 55001 (asset management system — requirements, 2024 edition), ISO 55002 (guidelines for application), ISO/TS 55010 (guidance on alignment of financial and non‑financial functions), and companion guidance standards published in 2024 such as ISO 55011 (public policy) and ISO 55012 (people involvement and competence). Users should apply ISO 55013 in conjunction with ISO 55001 and other relevant management system standards for coherent implementation.
