Full title and description

Reciprocating internal combustion engines — Measurement of sound power level using sound pressure — Part 1: Engineering method. This International Standard specifies the engineering method for measuring sound power level of reciprocating internal combustion engines using sound pressure measurements on a defined measurement surface around the engine.

Abstract

This document defines the engineering method (detailed, laboratory-level procedure) for determining the sound power level produced by reciprocating internal combustion engines. It applies to engines covered by ISO 3046-1 and to other reciprocating internal combustion engines where no more specific International Standard exists.

General information

  • Status: Published
  • Publication date: 2020-02-25 (Edition 1)
  • Publisher: ISO (International Organization for Standardization)
  • ICS / categories: 27.020; 17.140.20
  • Edition / version: Edition 1 (2020)
  • Number of pages: 26

Details above are from the ISO bibliographic entry for ISO 6798-1:2020.

Scope

Specifies the engineering (laboratory/controlled) measurement method for sound power level determination of reciprocating internal combustion engines. The procedure covers measurement surface definitions, microphone locations, instrumentation, data processing and calculation of sound power level, and is intended for engines within the field of application of ISO 3046‑1 and other reciprocating internal combustion engines lacking a dedicated standard.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definitions and terminology for reciprocating internal combustion engines and acoustic quantities (sound pressure, sound power, A-weighting, etc.).
  • Specification of measurement surface geometry and microphone positioning relative to the engine.
  • Instrumentation requirements: microphones, calibrators, analyzers, and environmental monitoring.
  • Procedures for performing measurements under controlled conditions (engine operating conditions, background noise handling, and test repeatability).
  • Processing and calculation methods to convert measured sound pressure levels on the measurement surface into sound power level results, including uncertainty considerations.
  • Reporting requirements: test conditions, corrections applied, and final sound power level presentation.

Typical use and users

Used by acoustical laboratories, engine manufacturers, test houses, R&D groups, certification bodies and consultants performing standardized noise assessments of reciprocating internal combustion engines. Typical applications include type-testing, product development, noise compliance assessment and comparison of engine acoustic performance.

Related standards

ISO 6798-2:2020 (Part 2: Survey method) — provides the survey (field) method alternative to Part 1; ISO 6798:1995 (withdrawn) — replaced by ISO 6798-1:2020 and ISO 6798-2:2020. The engineering method references general engine performance standards such as ISO 3046-1 for applicability to engine types.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 6798-1:2020 is an ISO International Standard that specifies the engineering method for measuring the sound power level of reciprocating internal combustion engines using sound pressure measurements.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers test setup, measurement-surface definition, microphone placement, instrumentation, measurement procedure, data processing and calculation of sound power level for controlled (laboratory) conditions. It is intended for engines within the scope of ISO 3046‑1 and similar engines.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Acoustical test laboratories, engine manufacturers, certification bodies, product developers and acoustic consultants who need standardized, repeatable measurements of engine sound power.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: ISO 6798-1:2020 is the current engineering-method part published in 2020 that replaced the earlier ISO 6798:1995 (which was withdrawn and split into Parts 1 and 2).

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is Part 1 (Engineering method) of the ISO 6798 series; Part 2 (Survey method) is published as ISO 6798-2:2020.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Sound power level, sound pressure, reciprocating internal combustion engine, acoustic measurement, engineering method, ISO 6798, engine noise.
