Full title and description

ISO 712-2:2024 — Cereals and cereal products — Determination of moisture content — Part 2: Automatic drying oven method. This International Standard specifies an automatic drying-oven procedure intended as the automatic reference method for determining moisture content in a range of cereals and cereal products.

Abstract

This document specifies an automatic method (automatic drying oven) as the reference method (see ISO 712-1) for determination of moisture content of cereals and cereal products. It is applicable to wheat, rice (paddy, husked and milled), barley, millet (Panicum miliaceum), rye, oats, triticale and sorghum in the form of grains, milled grains, semolina and flour. The method does not apply to maize and pulses (see ISO 6540 for maize and ISO 24557 for pulses).

General information

  • Status: Published.
  • Publication date: 6 September 2024.
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 67.060 (Cereals and pulses; cereals products).
  • Edition / version: Edition 1 (2024).
  • Number of pages: 8 pages (ISO edition).

Core bibliographic and lifecycle details as published by ISO and national adoption notices.

Scope

ISO 712-2:2024 provides a standardized automatic drying-oven procedure for measuring moisture in specified cereals and cereal products (listed above). It is intended to serve as the automatic reference method complementary to ISO 712-1, and explicitly excludes application to maize and pulses — which are covered by other ISO methods. The standard applies to samples in grain, milled grain, semolina and flour forms.

Key topics and requirements

  • Definition and designation of the automatic drying-oven reference method for moisture determination.
  • Applicability: wheat, rice (paddy, husked and milled), barley, millet (Panicum miliaceum), rye, oats, triticale and sorghum (grains, milled grains, semolina, flour).
  • Exclusions and cross-references: method does not apply to maize and pulses (see ISO 6540 and ISO 24557 respectively).
  • Conformance with ISO 712-1 as the reference framework (procedural alignment and traceability to the reference method).
  • Requirements to ensure reproducible moisture results for laboratory and quality-control use (as defined in the text of the standard).

These topics are drawn from the official scope and abstract of ISO 712-2:2024.

Typical use and users

Primary users include grain testing laboratories, food quality control and assurance teams, cereal processors and millers, commodity traders and inspection bodies. The standard is used when a reference or routine laboratory determination of moisture content is required for specification compliance, commercial transactions, process control and regulatory testing.

Related standards

Directly related and referenced standards include ISO 712-1 (reference method context), ISO 6540 (moisture determination in maize) and ISO 24557 (moisture determination in pulses). National adoptions (EN/ISO, BS EN, DIN EN etc.) may produce regional published versions.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 712-2:2024 is an International Standard that defines an automatic drying-oven method used as the automatic reference method for determining moisture content in specified cereals and cereal products.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers an automatic drying-oven procedure for measuring moisture in wheat, rice (paddy/husked/milled), barley, millet (Panicum miliaceum), rye, oats, triticale and sorghum in grain, milled grain, semolina and flour forms, and it explicitly excludes maize and pulses.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Grain testing laboratories, food processors, millers, commercial quality-control teams, inspection and certification bodies, and traders who need standardized, reproducible moisture measurements.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: Current — published as Edition 1 on 6 September 2024 (ISO publication). Users should check for any subsequent amendments or national adoptions for region-specific editions.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — it is Part 2 of the ISO 712 series on determination of moisture content; Part 1 provides the reference method context (ISO 712-1). National and regional adoptions may appear under EN/ISO, BS EN, DIN EN, etc.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Moisture content, cereals, automatic drying oven, reference method, wheat, rice, barley, sorghum, semolina, flour.
