Full title and description
ISO 717-2:2020 — Acoustics — Rating of sound insulation in buildings and of building elements — Part 2: Impact sound insulation. This International Standard defines single-number rating quantities and procedures for determining impact sound insulation of floors and the impact sound reduction provided by floor coverings or floating floors, based on laboratory and field measurements.
Abstract
This document: (a) defines single-number quantities for impact sound insulation in buildings and of floors; (b) gives rules for determining these quantities from measurements in one‑third‑octave bands (in accordance with ISO 10140‑3 and ISO 16283‑2) and from octave‑band field measurements where that option is used; (c) defines single-number quantities for impact sound reduction of floor coverings and floating floors from ISO 10140‑3 measurements; and (d) specifies a procedure for evaluating the weighted reduction in impact sound pressure level by floor coverings on lightweight floors. The standard includes annexes with extended frequency‑range ratings, methods for bare heavy floors, example calculations and guidance on alternative impact sources.

Scope
ISO 717-2:2020 provides the single-number rating system and calculation procedures to express impact sound insulation performance of building floors and floor/covering combinations. It applies to laboratory measurements and to field measurements (with provisions for one‑third‑octave and, for field work, optional octave‑band results). The standard is intended to support specification, testing and regulatory requirements by giving a concise rating for impact noise performance and by giving methods to evaluate the reduction produced by coverings and floating floor constructions.
Key topics and requirements
- Definition of single-number rating quantities for impact sound insulation and for impact sound reduction by coverings and floating floors.
- Rules for deriving ratings from one‑third‑octave band measurement results (ISO 10140‑3 laboratory and ISO 16283‑2 field methods).
- Provision for using octave‑band results for field measurements when that option is selected.
- Procedure for weighted evaluation of reduction in impact sound pressure level produced by floor coverings on lightweight floors.
- Specification of numerical values and steps for single-number evaluations (including finer 0.1 dB steps where required for uncertainty expression).
- Annexes covering extended frequency-range rating, methods for bare heavy floors combined with coverings, example calculations, and use of alternative impact sources (e.g., rubber ball).
Typical use and users
Used by acoustic consultants, test laboratories, floor-system and floor‑covering manufacturers, architects, building services and façade engineers, code and regulatory authorities, and building product certification bodies. Typical uses include product development and comparison, laboratory and field testing, compliance demonstration with building regulations and specifications, and the formulation of acoustic performance requirements for dwellings, offices and other buildings.
Related standards
Closely linked standards and documents commonly used together with ISO 717-2:2020 include ISO 717-1 (airborne sound insulation — rating), the ISO 10140 series (laboratory measurement of sound insulation of building elements, especially ISO 10140‑3 for impact sound), the ISO 16283 series (field measurement of sound insulation, especially ISO 16283‑2), and related national/adopted versions (for example EN ISO 717-2 / BS EN ISO 717-2). Laboratories also refer to ISO 10140‑5 (requirements for test facilities and equipment) when performing laboratory tests.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 717-2:2020 is the ISO method for rating impact sound insulation of floors and for quantifying the reduction in impact sound provided by floor coverings and floating floors using single-number quantities derived from measured spectra.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the definition and calculation rules for single-number impact sound ratings based on laboratory and field measurements (one‑third‑octave and optional octave bands), procedures to evaluate the effect of floor coverings (including lightweight floors), and informative annexes with examples and extended options.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Acoustic consultants, test houses and laboratories, manufacturers of floors and floor coverings, architects and building regulators use ISO 717-2 to specify, test and verify impact sound performance in buildings.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The 2020 edition (published 2 December 2020) is the current edition, replacing earlier editions. As with all ISO standards, it is subject to periodic review (typically every five years).
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 717 is a multi‑part series for rating sound insulation in buildings and of building elements. Part 1 addresses airborne sound insulation (ISO 717-1) and Part 2 addresses impact sound insulation (this document). The series is intended to provide concise single-number ratings for building acoustic performance.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Impact sound, impact sound insulation, floor coverings, weighted impact level, single-number rating, ISO 10140, ISO 16283, building acoustics.
