Full title and description
ISO 8067:2018 — Flexible cellular polymeric materials — Determination of tear strength. This International Standard specifies methods for measuring the tear strength (tear resistance) of flexible cellular polymeric materials (foams) using standardised test specimens and procedures to produce comparable tear-strength values for quality control, materials development and conformity assessment.
Abstract
This document specifies two test methods for determining the tear strength of flexible cellular polymeric materials: method A (trouser test piece) and method B (angle test piece without a nick). The standard defines specimen preparation, conditioning, test apparatus and test speeds, the procedure for carrying out the tests and the calculation and reporting of results.

Scope
ISO 8067:2018 applies to flexible cellular polymeric materials (foams) and specifies two laboratory test methods to determine tear strength under defined conditions. The scope covers specimen types (trouser and angle specimens), preparation and conditioning of samples, test-machine requirements, test speeds, calculation of tear strength and how results should be reported. It is intended for use where comparative values of tear resistance are required for specification, quality control and research. Note that a draft revision (ISO/DIS 8067) has been developed to update the standard.
Key topics and requirements
- Two standard test methods: method A (trouser test piece) and method B (angle test piece without a nick).
- Requirements for specimen dimensions, orientation and preparation.
- Conditioning of specimens to specified temperature and humidity prior to testing.
- Details of test apparatus and measurement (clamps, grips, test-speed control and force measurement).
- Calculation procedures for tear strength and reporting conventions (units, averaging, test conditions).
- Limitations and applicability statements for different foam types and thickness ranges (as indicated in the standard text).
Typical use and users
Used by materials and testing laboratories, foam and polymer manufacturers, product designers, quality assurance teams and regulatory or standards organisations. Typical uses include production quality control, comparative materials assessment, product development and type-testing of flexible cellular polymeric materials where tear resistance is a relevant performance parameter.
Related standards
ISO 8067:2018 supersedes earlier editions of the same standard (for example ISO 8067:2008 and ISO 8067:1989). A draft revision (ISO/DIS 8067) has been prepared as the next edition. The standard is maintained by ISO/TC 45/SC 4 (technical committee for rubber and plastics). Users may also consult other ISO test methods for polymer and rubber properties when comparing or complementing tear-strength data.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 8067:2018 is an International Standard that specifies laboratory methods for determining the tear strength of flexible cellular polymeric materials (foams), providing standardised procedures to obtain comparable results.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers two test methods (trouser and angle test pieces), specimen preparation and conditioning, test-machine requirements, test procedures, calculation of tear strength and reporting of results.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Materials testing laboratories, foam and polymer manufacturers, R&D and quality-control personnel, and standards bodies use this standard for comparative testing and specification work.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: ISO 8067:2018 is the published (current) edition from July 2018. A draft revision (ISO/DIS 8067) has been prepared and is in the ISO development process to become the next edition. Users should confirm whether a newer edition has been published before relying on the status for regulated procurement or conformity assessment.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: ISO 8067 is a standalone test-method standard for tear strength of flexible cellular polymeric materials, but it is part of ISO/TC 45/SC 4’s portfolio of standards addressing testing of rubber and polymeric materials; it also has earlier editions in its lifecycle (1989, 2008).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Tear strength, tear resistance, foam, flexible cellular polymeric materials, trouser test, angle test, specimen conditioning, ISO 8067.
