Full title and description

Reciprocating internal combustion engine driven alternating current generating sets — Part 13: Safety. This International Standard specifies safety requirements and test provisions for reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engine driven AC generating sets up to 1 000 V, including the engine, AC generator and associated controlgear, switchgear and auxiliary equipment, intended to protect users and service personnel from hazards arising during normal operation, testing and maintenance.

Abstract

ISO 8528-13:2016 sets out safety design requirements, guarding, electrical protection, fuel and exhaust considerations, emergency stopping and labelling for RIC engine driven generating sets for land and non-seagoing marine use. It excludes applications on seagoing vessels, mobile offshore units, aircraft, road vehicles and locomotives and does not cover special requirements for potentially explosive atmospheres or arc welding equipment. Annex A identifies relevant hazards. The document is intended to be used alongside other parts of the ISO 8528 series.

General information

  • Status: Published; reviewed and confirmed in 2021 (remains current on ISO record; noted for future revision).
  • Publication date: May 2016 (corrected version published October 2016).
  • Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
  • ICS / categories: 27.020 (Internal combustion engines); 29.160.40 (Generating sets).
  • Edition / version: Edition 1 (2016).
  • Number of pages: 41 pages (ISO publication).

Scope

Applies to reciprocating internal combustion engine driven AC generating sets up to 1 000 V for land and marine use in domestic, recreational and industrial applications. The standard covers safety-related design and test requirements to reduce hazards to users and maintenance personnel. It does not apply to generating sets fitted on board seagoing vessels and mobile offshore units, to aircraft, to propulsion of road vehicles or locomotives, nor to arc welding equipment; it also does not include special requirements for explosive atmospheres. ISO 8528-13 is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 8528 parts 1–6 where applicable.

Key topics and requirements

  • Safety design principles for generating-set assemblies (mechanical and electrical protective measures).
  • Guards and protection for moving parts and hot surfaces to prevent contact injuries.
  • Electrical safety: insulation, earthing/grounding, protection against electric shock and safe arrangement of controlgear and switchgear.
  • Fuel system and storage safety, protection against fire and leakage, ventilation and exhaust routing.
  • Emergency stop functions, interlocks, controls labelling and operator information/instructions.
  • Requirements for tests, verification and marking; identification of hazards (Annex A) to inform design and risk reduction measures.

Typical use and users

Used by genset manufacturers, OEMs, design engineers, safety and compliance engineers, test laboratories, procurement/specification authors, installers and equipment assessors to ensure that stationary and non-seagoing marine generating sets meet recognized safety requirements and to harmonize product labelling, instructions and test procedures. Regulatory bodies and certification organizations may also reference the standard when evaluating safety of generating-set products.

Related standards

ISO 8528-13 is part of the ISO 8528 series. Closely related parts include ISO 8528-1 (application, ratings and performance), ISO 8528-2 (engines), ISO 8528-3 (alternating current generators), ISO 8528-4 (controlgear and switchgear), ISO 8528-5 (generating sets), ISO 8528-6 (test methods) and subsequent parts (7, 8, 9, 10, 12, etc.) that address declarations, low-power requirements, vibration and noise measurement, emergency power and other subjects within the series. Users should consult the relevant parts of the series together with national/adopted variants where applicable.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: ISO 8528-13:2016 is the part of the ISO 8528 series that specifies safety requirements for reciprocating internal combustion engine driven alternating current generating sets (gensets) up to 1 000 V.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers safety design and test requirements — mechanical guards, electrical protection, fuel/exhaust/ventilation safety, emergency stop and labelling — for land and non-seagoing marine generating sets; it excludes seagoing vessels, aircraft, road vehicles/locomotives and explosive-atmosphere special requirements.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Manufacturers, design and safety engineers, test laboratories, certifiers, procurement/spec writers and regulatory bodies involved with genset design, manufacture, installation and assessment.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The published edition is Edition 1 (May 2016) with corrected versions in October 2016; the ISO record shows the document was reviewed and confirmed in 2021 and remains current while a future revision has been indicated on the ISO lifecycle. Users should check the ISO catalogue or national standards body for any revision published after 2016.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — ISO 8528 is a multipart series covering application, engines, alternators, controlgear, generating sets, test methods and other topics; ISO 8528-13 is the safety-focused part of that series.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Generating set, genset safety, reciprocating internal combustion engine, AC generator, controlgear, switchgear, electrical protection, guarding, emergency stop, labelling.
