Full title and description
STB BS EN 1034-1:2021 — Safety of machinery — Safety requirements for the design and construction of paper making and finishing machines — Part 1: Common requirements. This document sets out common terminology, hazard identification and general safety requirements that apply across the EN 1034 series for paper-making and finishing equipment.
Abstract
EN 1034-1:2021 defines the common requirements to be applied when designing and constructing paper-making and paper-finishing machines in order to address significant hazards, hazardous situations and hazardous events arising during intended use and reasonably foreseeable misuse. It is intended to be used together with the specific part(s) of EN 1034 that apply to particular machine types; specific parts may add or override requirements given in this common part.
General information
- Status: Active / Definitive.
- Publication date: 2021 (CEN approval 12 April 2021; national adoptions published in May–June 2021).
- Publisher: Published as a European Standard by CEN and adopted/published nationally (e.g., BSI as BS EN 1034-1:2021).
- ICS / categories: 85.100 (Equipment for the paper industry); 13.110 (Safety of machinery).
- Edition / version: EN 1034-1:2021 (current 2021 edition; revises/supersedes EN 1034-1:2000+A1:2010).
- Number of pages: Approximately 49–52 pages depending on national publication; typical national publications list 49–52 pages.
Scope
EN 1034-1:2021 applies to paper making and paper finishing machines listed in its Annex A. It addresses all significant hazards, hazardous situations and hazardous events relevant to those machines when used as intended and under reasonably foreseeable misuse by the manufacturer. The standard does not apply to machines used in paper converting and should be used in conjunction with the specific EN 1034 parts that cover particular machine groups.
Key topics and requirements
- Definitions and terminology specific to paper-making and finishing machinery.
- General safety design principles and risk reduction measures applicable across the series.
- Requirements for guarding, access, maintenance and safe operation.
- Control system and emergency stop requirements, including safety-related control functions.
- Identification and treatment of machine-specific hazards (as referenced and expanded in the specific parts of EN 1034).
- Instructions for use, markings and information to be supplied by the manufacturer.
Typical use and users
Primary users include machine designers and manufacturers of paper-making and finishing equipment, safety and compliance engineers, CE-marking specialists, end-users (paper mills and finishing plants), inspection bodies and test laboratories. The standard is used during machine design, safety validation, risk assessment and conformity assessment activities.
Related standards
EN 1034-1 is the common part of a multi-part series. Other parts cover machine-specific requirements (examples include EN 1034-2 Barking drums, EN 1034-3 Rereelers and winders, EN 1034-4 Pulpers and their loading facilities, EN 1034-5 Sheeters, EN 1034-6 Calender, EN 1034-7 Chests, EN 1034-8 Refining plants, EN 1034-13 Machines for de-wiring bales and units, etc.). Each specific part is intended to be used together with EN 1034-1.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: EN 1034-1:2021 is the common-part European standard that sets out general safety requirements and terminology for the design and construction of paper-making and paper-finishing machines.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers common requirements applicable across the EN 1034 series: hazard identification, general safety design principles, guarding, control-system safety, maintenance and information to be supplied by the manufacturer. For machine-specific hazards and requirements, the applicable part(s) of EN 1034 must be consulted.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Machine manufacturers, safety engineers, conformity assessors, plant operators and testing/inspection bodies in the paper and board industry. It is used during design, risk assessment, conformity work and maintenance planning.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: EN 1034-1:2021 is the current (2021) edition and supersedes EN 1034-1:2000+A1:2010. National adoptions (for example BS EN 1034-1:2021) were published in mid‑2021. Users should check national standards bodies for any subsequent amendments or corrigenda.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — EN 1034 is a multipart standard for paper-making and finishing machinery. EN 1034-1 is the common part; other parts handle specific machine types (see Related standards above).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Safety of machinery, paper making, finishing machines, guarding, risk assessment, control systems, EN 1034.
