Full title and description

STB BS EN IEC 60335-1-2023 + A11-2023 (2024) — Household and similar electrical appliances — Safety — Part 1: General requirements. This publication is the 2023 edition of the Part 1 general requirements (EN IEC 60335-1:2023) together with Amendment A11:2023, presented here as a national adoption (BS/EN/IEC) in the 2024 product release. It sets out mandatory construction, electrical, mechanical, thermal and radiation safety requirements applicable to a wide range of household and similar electrical appliances and is intended to be used together with the applicable Part 2 (particular requirements) standards for specific appliance types.

Abstract

This standard establishes general safety requirements, tests and verification methods for household and similar electrical appliances with rated voltages up to 250 V for single‑phase appliances and up to 480 V for other appliances. Amendment A11:2023 updates definitions and test procedures (including new provisions for radio functions and child‑appealing appliances), revises temperature and heating limits, clarifies electrical safety test requirements, and adds or updates normative references related to electromagnetic fields, supply quality and specific test probes and annexes. The document is intended for manufacturers, test laboratories, conformity assessment bodies and standards committees.

General information

  • Status: Current / Published (national adoption 2024)
  • Publication date: EN IEC 60335-1:2023 (2023); Amendment A11 published 22 December 2023; national BS/EN adoption issued in 2024.
  • Publisher: European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) / British Standards Institution (BSI) as the national publisher for the BS adoption; text derived from IEC/CLC committees.
  • ICS / categories: 13.120 (Domestic safety); 97.030 (Domestic electrical appliances in general)
  • Edition / version: EN IEC 60335-1:2023 with Amendment A11:2023 — national BS adoption (2024) — commonly referenced as BS EN IEC 60335-1:2023+A11:2023.
  • Number of pages: Approximately 260–270 pages (varies by national reprint / formatting; typical commercial editions list ~264 pages).

Scope

Part 1 contains general safety requirements for the design, construction and testing of household and similar electrical appliances for domestic and certain commercial uses. Appliances covered include, but are not limited to, portable and fixed appliances used by laypersons and appliances for use in shops, light industry and on farms that may be used by non‑specialists. The standard does not cover exclusively industrial appliances or appliances intended for special locations with unusual environmental hazards unless otherwise stated in specific Part 2 standards. It is to be applied in conjunction with the relevant Part 2 standards that give particular requirements for specific appliance types.

Key topics and requirements

  • General construction and marking requirements, including instructions for safe use and warning information.
  • Electrical safety: insulation, earthing, leakage current, electric strength, clearances and creepage distances.
  • Heating and temperature limits for accessible parts and materials; specific temperature limits for child‑appealing appliances and liquids accessible to users.
  • Mechanical hazards: moving parts, stability, guards and access to hazardous zones.
  • Radio function and wireless features: definitions, test configurations, continuous‑mode testing during thermal and abnormal‑operation tests, antenna testing (connected/disconnected).
  • EMF and radiation considerations, with updated normative references for assessing electromagnetic effects and supply quality.
  • Protection against abnormal operation and foreseeable misuse; fault‑condition testing and endurance checks.
  • Requirements for supply connections, plugs and flexible cords and references to applicable wiring/cable standards.
  • Updated annexes covering a range of normative tests and special cases (including UV‑C effects on materials, appliances intended for remote communications, and additional test probes).

Typical use and users

Manufacturers and product designers of household and similar electrical appliances use this standard to design and verify safe products. Test and certification laboratories use it as the basis for type testing and conformity assessment. Regulatory bodies, market surveillance authorities and notified bodies refer to it when assessing compliance with national and EU safety legislation. Standards committees and technical experts use it as a reference when preparing or updating Part 2 particular‑requirements standards.

Related standards

This Part 1 standard is intended to be used together with the IEC/EN 60335‑2 series (Part 2 particular requirements) for specific appliance types (for example 60335‑2‑4 for spin extractors, 60335‑2‑6 for stationary cooking ranges, etc.). It also references and is supplemented by standards for electromagnetic fields and safety (e.g., EN IEC 62311, EN 62479), supply‑voltage characteristics (e.g., EN 50160) and wiring/cable standards (EN 50525 series). National adoptions and previous editions (for example BS EN 60335‑1:2012 with subsequent amendments) are superseded where the new edition and amendment apply.

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: It is the general requirements standard (Part 1) for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances — EN IEC 60335‑1:2023 with Amendment A11:2023 — published in late 2023 and adopted nationally (BS/EN) in 2024.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers general safety requirements, tests and verification methods addressing electrical, mechanical, thermal and radiation hazards for household and similar appliances, and it is used together with Part 2 standards that specify particular requirements for specific appliance types.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Appliance manufacturers, product designers, test laboratories, conformity assessment bodies, market surveillance authorities, and standards developers use this standard.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: This is the current Part 1 edition as of the 2023 publication and the A11:2023 amendment; it supersedes earlier editions and amendments where national adoption has been completed. Users should confirm applicable national publication/adoption dates and any later amendments or consolidated versions when performing conformity assessments.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: Yes — IEC/EN 60335 is a multi‑part series. Part 1 contains general requirements; the Part 2 series contains the particular requirements for specific appliance categories (e.g., washing machines, ovens, room heaters).

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Household appliances, safety, general requirements, EN IEC 60335-1, amendment A11, electrical safety, child‑appealing, radio function, test methods.
