Full title and description
STB DIN EN ISO 13628-16 E 2010-04 — Petroleum and natural gas industries — Design and operation of subsea production systems — Part 16: Specification for flexible pipe ancillary equipment. (English and German versions available; adopted as a DIN/EN identically worded adoption of ISO/DIS 13628-16:2010.)
Abstract
This part of ISO 13628 specifies technical requirements for safe, dimensionally and functionally interchangeable flexible pipe ancillary equipment. It gives minimum requirements for design, material selection, manufacture, testing, documentation, marking and packaging and identifies the applicability of those requirements to specific ancillary items. The standard lists and gives requirements for equipment such as bend stiffeners, bend restrictors, bellmouths, buoyancy and ballast modules, subsea buoys and tethers, riser/tether bases, clamps and other mechanical protection and load‑transfer devices.
General information
- Status: Withdrawn (national adoptions indicate withdrawal of this adoption/edition).
- Publication date: 01 April 2010 (edition indicated as 2010-04 / April 2010).
- Publisher: Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) as DIN EN ISO adoption; originally published as an ISO/CEN collaborative document.
- ICS / categories: 75 — Petroleum and related technologies (notably 75.180 Equipment for petroleum and natural gas industries).
- Edition / version: 2010 edition (English version indicated by the E suffix; designation STB DIN EN ISO 13628-16 E 2010-04).
- Number of pages: Approximately 320–330 pages (national listings show e.g. 327 pages for the adopted document).
Scope
This part of ISO 13628 defines the technical requirements for ancillary equipment used with flexible pipes in subsea production systems. It applies to a broad range of ancillary items (bend stiffeners, bend restrictors, bellmouths, buoyancy and ballast modules, subsea buoys, tethers and tether clamps, riser and tether bases, clamping devices including piggy‑back and repair clamps, I/J‑tube seals, pull‑in heads/installation aids, connectors, load‑transfer devices, mechanical protection and fire protection, etc.). The standard may be applied to bonded flexible pipe ancillary equipment where appropriate, but does not address complete riser systems beyond specified bases and load‑transfer devices, nor does it cover storage devices such as reels. Annexes are informative/guidance only.
Key topics and requirements
- Technical requirements for dimensional and functional interchangeability of ancillary equipment.
- Minimum requirements for design principles and engineering justification.
- Material selection guidance for metallic, polymeric and composite components.
- Manufacturing and fabrication quality requirements, including welding and bonding where applicable.
- Testing requirements and recommended factory acceptance tests (FATs) and inspections.
- Documentation, marking, traceability and packaging requirements for subsea handling and storage.
- Applicability notes that specify which clauses apply to particular ancillary items (e.g., umbilicals, bonded flexible pipes, clamps, buoyancy modules).
- Guidance references to related parts of ISO 13628 (for system‑level and usage guidance see ISO 13628‑17).
Typical use and users
Used by flexible pipe and ancillary‑equipment manufacturers, subsea equipment designers, offshore engineering and procurement teams, classification societies, testing and inspection organizations, and operator engineering groups responsible for specifying and validating subsea flexible pipe installations. The standard is typically referenced in specifications, procurement documents and engineering procedures for flexible‑pipe installations and associated hardware.
Related standards
Part of the ISO 13628 series (Design and operation of subsea production systems). Related parts to consider include ISO 13628‑1 (general requirements), ISO 13628‑2 (flexible pipe applications and interfaces), ISO 13628‑4 (subsea wellhead and tree equipment) and ISO 13628‑17 (guidelines on the use of ancillary equipment), among others in the series addressing subsea structures, control systems and interfaces.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: ISO 13628‑16 (adopted as DIN EN ISO 13628‑16 E 2010‑04) is a specification for flexible pipe ancillary equipment used in subsea production systems; it sets minimum technical, manufacturing and testing requirements for those items.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers the design, material selection, manufacture, testing, documentation, marking and packaging requirements for a wide range of ancillary equipment associated with flexible pipes (bend stiffeners/restrictors, bellmouths, buoyancy and ballast modules, buoys and tethers, clamps, connectors, load‑transfer devices, mechanical and fire protection, etc.). Certain system components (e.g., full riser systems, storage reels) are outside its scope.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Flexible‑pipe manufacturers, subsea equipment designers, offshore operators, procurement and quality teams, testing/inspection bodies and engineering consultancies involved in subsea flexible‑pipe projects.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: The 2010 DIN/EN/ISO adoption is listed as published in April 2010 but national listings indicate this adoption/edition has been withdrawn; users should verify the current status with their national standards body or the ISO catalogue before relying on it for procurement or compliance.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — ISO 13628 is a multi‑part series covering design and operation of subsea production systems; part 16 addresses flexible pipe ancillary equipment and references other parts (for example ISO 13628‑17 for use/guidance and other parts for specific equipment interfaces).
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Subsea, flexible pipe, ancillary equipment, bend stiffener, buoyancy module, tether clamp, load transfer, clamping devices, testing, marking, ISO 13628.
