Full title and description
DIN EN ISO 5079:2021-02 — Textilfasern — Bestimmung der Höchstzugkraft und Höchstzugkraftdehnung an einzelnen Fasern (ISO 5079:2020). National adoption (German language version) of EN ISO 5079:2020 specifying a laboratory method for measuring the breaking force and elongation at break of individual textile fibres using tensile-testing machines with a constant rate of extension.
Abstract
This standard defines the procedure, conditioning, test parameters and reporting requirements for determining the breaking force and the elongation at break of individual textile fibres. It is intended to ensure reproducible single-fibre tensile test results when using machines operating at a constant extension rate, and describes specimen preparation, gripping, gauge length, test speed, data calculation and required test atmosphere/conditioning.

Scope
The document specifies a test method for measuring the breaking force and elongation at break of individual fibres in the conditioned or wet state. It applies to fibres for which a sufficient fibre length is available to mount the specimen at the prescribed gauge length. The method is limited to tensile-testing machines that operate at a constant extension (strain) rate. Results obtained with different types of testing machines can differ; this standard therefore restricts the method to constant extension-rate apparatus to improve comparability.
Key topics and requirements
- Test atmosphere and conditioning of specimens (temperature and relative humidity requirements prior to testing).
- Specimen preparation and selection criteria (including treatment of crimped or textured fibres when length permits).
- Gripping methods and grip types suitable for single-fibre tests to avoid slippage or fibre damage.
- Prescribed gauge lengths and their effect on measured properties.
- Constant extension-rate operation: specified test speeds and machine requirements.
- Calculation methods for breaking force, elongation at break and reporting of results (including units and significant figures).
- Requirements for test equipment calibration, measurement resolution and repeatability considerations.
- Reporting requirements: test conditions, specimen details, machine type, number of tests and statistical presentation of results.
Typical use and users
Used by textile laboratories, fibre and yarn manufacturers, quality control and inspection bodies, research institutes and testing services to characterise individual fibre mechanical properties for product development, quality acceptance, certification and research. Also used by standards committees and educators in textile testing methodology.
Related standards
This document is part of the body of ISO/EN standards for textile testing and is typically used alongside other test standards covering yarn and fabric tensile properties, conditioning of textiles and fibre identification. It replaces the earlier national adoption of ISO 5079 (1996) and is the EN/ISO reference for single-fibre tensile testing methods.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: DIN EN ISO 5079:2021-02 is the German national adoption of EN ISO 5079:2020 that specifies a laboratory method for determining the breaking force and elongation at break of individual textile fibres using constant extension-rate tensile-testing machines.
Q: What does it cover?
A: It covers specimen conditioning, preparation, gripping, gauge length, test speed (constant extension rate), calculation of breaking force and elongation, equipment requirements and how results should be reported to ensure reproducibility and comparability for single-fibre tensile tests.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Textile manufacturers, fibre producers, independent testing laboratories, R&D centres, quality assurance teams and standards bodies involved in textile testing and specification.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: It is the current adopted national version of EN ISO 5079:2020 published in early 2021; it replaced the earlier 1996 national adoption.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: It forms part of the ISO/EN suite of standards for textile testing (single-fibre, yarn and fabric test methods) and is implemented nationally as EN ISO 5079. Users commonly apply it together with other ISO/EN textile test standards for a comprehensive evaluation of textile materials.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Breaking force, elongation at break, single-fibre tensile test, textile fibres, constant extension rate, conditioning, gauge length, DIN EN ISO 5079.
