Full title and description

STB PD IEC TR 61998-2015 — Model and framework for standardization in multimedia equipment and systems (IEC TR 61998:2015). This published document presents a model and high-level framework to guide IEC standardization activities for audio, video and multimedia equipment and systems (work of TC 100), updating and replacing the original 1999 technical report.

Abstract

IEC TR 61998:2015 (edition 2.0) provides models and an overarching framework to support the standardization of multimedia technology. Prepared as a result of the IEC PACT report, the technical report reworks the original 1999 edition into a shorter, technology‑neutral model that focuses on data usage and communication, system and user interfaces, interchange and distribution, and management/measurement aspects relevant to multimedia systems. Informative annexes from the previous edition were removed where their roles had become obsolete.

General information

  • Status: Published (Technical Report; in force).
  • Publication date: 19 November 2015.
  • Publisher: International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
  • ICS / categories: 33.160.60 (Multimedia systems and teleconferencing equipment).
  • Edition / version: Edition 2.0 (2015).
  • Number of pages: 24.

Scope

This technical report establishes a model and framework for IEC standardization activity in the multimedia domain (audio, video and multimedia equipment and systems). It is intended to guide TC 100 work by describing frameworks from the viewpoint of data usage and communication and by identifying areas where standardization is appropriate. The 2015 edition cancels and replaces IEC TR 61998:1999, removes technology‑specific annexes that are no longer relevant, and presents a more general, future‑oriented structure to accommodate evolving multimedia technologies.

Key topics and requirements

  • High‑level model for multimedia systems: entities, data flows, and relationships relevant to IEC standardization.
  • Framework for standardizing system and user interfaces, interchange and distribution mechanisms, and measurement/management functions.
  • Emphasis on models of data usage and communication to support interoperability and future technologies within TC 100's remit.
  • Guidance for identifying standardization gaps and priorities in multimedia technology.
  • Removal of obsolete, technology‑specific annexes — the report is technology‑neutral and descriptive (informative, not normative).

Typical use and users

Used by standards developers, technical committees (notably IEC TC 100), national standards bodies, product and system architects, manufacturers of audio/video and multimedia equipment, interoperability test laboratories, and policy makers who need a high‑level model to align specifications and identify areas for new standards or revisions.

Related standards

Supersedes IEC TR 61998:1999. Related documents and areas of interest include TC 100 deliverables and other interoperability/architecture references used in multimedia and communications standards work (examples: IEC/TS and TRs produced for multimedia, interoperability and security, OSI/communications references such as ISO/IEC 7498‑1, and domain‑specific standards and technical specifications that TC 100 cross‑references when defining interfaces and data models).

FAQ

Q: What is this standard?

A: IEC TR 61998:2015 is a technical report that provides a model and framework to guide IEC standardization activities for multimedia equipment and systems (work of IEC TC 100). It is an informative, technology‑neutral document rather than a prescriptive product standard.

Q: What does it cover?

A: It covers high‑level modelling for multimedia systems — including data usage and communication models, system and user interface considerations, interchange and distribution, and measurement/management aspects — to help prioritize and structure standardization work in the multimedia domain.

Q: Who typically uses it?

A: Standards committees (especially IEC TC 100), national standards bodies, manufacturers and designers of audio/video and multimedia systems, interoperability test houses, and anyone involved in planning or aligning multimedia standards and specifications.

Q: Is it current or superseded?

A: The 2015 edition (edition 2.0) supersedes the 1999 edition. As published on 19 November 2015, the report is the current IEC TR 61998 text; users should check with their national standards body or IEC for any later revisions or withdrawals if currency must be confirmed.

Q: Is it part of a series?

A: IEC TR 61998 is a stand‑alone technical report focused on multimedia standardization frameworks; it sits within the body of IEC/TC 100 deliverables and is complementary to other IEC and ISO/IEC guidance and technical specifications that address multimedia, communications, interoperability and security.

Q: What are the key keywords?

A: Multimedia, model, framework, standardization, interoperability, TC 100, audio‑video, data usage, communication, system interface.
