Full title and description
PD ISO/TR 6336-30:2022 — Calculation of load capacity of spur and helical gears — Part 30: Calculation examples for the application of ISO 6336 parts 1, 2, 3 and 5. This Technical Report provides worked example calculations demonstrating the application of the approximation methods and the calculation procedures given in the referenced parts of ISO 6336 to aid correct use of the standard series.
Abstract
This technical report presents worked examples that apply the approximation methods for determining influential factors used in ISO 6336 (for example the dynamic factor Kv and the load distribution factors KHα, KHβ). The examples illustrate the application of the calculation procedures of ISO 6336‑1, ISO 6336‑2, ISO 6336‑3 and ISO 6336‑5 and are intended for guidance only; they do not introduce recommended design values for real gearing and do not cover the more advanced analysis techniques.
General information
- Status: Published.
- Publication date: December 2022 (Edition 2, published 7 December 2022).
- Publisher: International Organization for Standardization (ISO). (Also published/adopted as national PD/identical publications by national bodies such as BSI.)
- ICS / categories: 21.200 — Gears (power transmission systems / gear drives).
- Edition / version: Edition 2 (2022).
- Number of pages: 63 pages (technical report).
Scope
Provides calculation examples to demonstrate the application of ISO 6336 parts 1, 2, 3 and 5 using the approximation methods described in those parts. The examples show how to calculate factors and carry out sample strength checks for spur and helical gears; they are intended as guidance for applying the standard procedures and are not a source of prescriptive design values or advanced-analysis cases.
Key topics and requirements
- Worked calculation examples applying ISO 6336 parts 1, 2, 3 and 5.
- Demonstration of approximation methods for specific influential factors (for example Kv, KHα, KHβ).
- Step‑by‑step sample calculations for flank and root strength assessments following ISO 6336 procedures.
- Guidance-only data: example numbers and safety factors are illustrative and not to be used as mandatory design limits.
- Excludes advanced analytical methods and complex numerical examples — focuses on standard approximation approaches.
Typical use and users
Intended for gear designers, mechanical engineers, standards implementers, verification engineers and educators who apply the ISO 6336 calculation procedures. Useful as a training and reference aid when learning how to perform strength and load‑capacity calculations for spur and helical gears in accordance with the ISO 6336 series.
Related standards
Part of the ISO 6336 family (Calculation of load capacity of spur and helical gears). Directly related to ISO 6336‑1, ISO 6336‑2, ISO 6336‑3 and ISO 6336‑5 (the worked examples illustrate application of those parts). This TR replaces/updates the previous ISO/TR 6336‑30:2017 edition.

FAQ
Q: What is this standard?
A: A Technical Report (ISO/TR 6336‑30:2022) providing worked examples that demonstrate the application of the calculation procedures in ISO 6336 parts 1, 2, 3 and 5.
Q: What does it cover?
A: Example calculations using the approximation methods for influential factors (dynamic factor, load distribution factors, etc.) and worked checks of flank/root strength following ISO 6336 procedures; it does not provide prescriptive design values nor advanced analytical techniques.
Q: Who typically uses it?
A: Gear designers, mechanical and drivetrain engineers, standards implementers, test engineers and instructors who need example applications of ISO 6336 calculation methods.
Q: Is it current or superseded?
A: Current — ISO/TR 6336‑30:2022 (Edition 2) was published in December 2022 and supersedes the 2017 edition.
Q: Is it part of a series?
A: Yes — it is part of the ISO 6336 series (Calculation of load capacity of spur and helical gears) and specifically gives calculation examples for applying parts 1, 2, 3 and 5.
Q: What are the key keywords?
A: Gears, spur, helical, load capacity, strength calculation, Kv, KHα, KHβ, ISO 6336, worked examples.
